C175 Oil&Gas Offshore Engine Caterpillar

Fuel Filter Is Restricted

Usage:

C175-16 P6N
The Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects an abnormal fuel filter differential pressure.

Use this procedure to troubleshoot a problem with the fuel filters. Also, use this procedure if one of the following event codes are active or logged.

Table 1
J1939 Code and Description  CDL Code and Description  Comments
1382–15
Engine Fuel Filter (suction side) Differential Pressure : Data High - Least Severe
E1129 (1)
Fuel Filter (suction side) Restriction
For the primary fuel filters, the difference between the filtered fuel pressure and the unfiltered fuel pressure is greater than the trip point.
5584-0
Engine Fuel Filter Degradation : High - most severe (3)
E390 (3)
Fuel Filter Restriction
For the secondary fuel filters, the difference between the filtered fuel pressure and the unfiltered fuel pressure is greater than the trip point pressure.
5584-15
Engine Fuel Filter Degradation : High - least severe (1)
E390 (1)
Fuel Filter Restriction
For the secondary fuel filters, the difference between the filtered fuel pressure and the unfiltered fuel pressure is greater than the trip point pressure.
5584-16
Engine Fuel Filter Degradation : High - moderate severity (2)
E390 (2)
Fuel Filter Restriction
For the secondary fuel filters, the difference between the filtered fuel pressure and the unfiltered fuel pressure is greater than the trip point pressure.

Probable Causes

  • Codes

  • Fuel filter

Recommended Action

Note: Do not fill the canister or the fuel filter before installation. The fuel can carry debris into the fuel filter and the fuel system may be damaged. The electric priming pump is designed to purge the trapped air in the new filters.

Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results

1. Check for Codes

A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.

B. Determine if a code is active or logged.

Codes

Result: A E390 or E1129 code is active or logged.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Replace the Fuel Filters

A. Replace the appropriate fuel filter elements for the code.

B. Prime the fuel system. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for information.

C. Restart the engine and check for an active event code for the filter that was changed.

Fuel Filter

Result: After starting the engine, the event code is no longer active for the filter that was changed.

If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
