    (A) Inspection hole

    (B) Double notch

    (C) Single notch

  1. Install turning tool (3) .

    Illustration 3g03853420

    (A) Hole on flywheel with a notch corresponding to pistons 3-4 TDC

    (B) Hole on flywheel with a notch, corresponding to piston 1-6 TDC

    (C) Hole on flywheel with a notch corresponding to pistons 2-5 TDC

    (D) Hole on flywheel with 2 notches, position corresponding to 54° before Cylinder 1 and 6 at TDC

  1. Use turning tool (3) to put the No. 1 piston at the top center position on the compression stroke. Rotate the engine in direction of normal rotation until the double notch (D) is visible through inspection hole (C) . Then continue rotating the engine in direction of normal rotation until the next single notch (A) is visible through inspection hole (C) .

No. 1 piston is at top center position when the single notch (A) that follows the double notch (D) , in the normal direction of rotation, is visible through inspection hole (C) .

  1. Remove the flywheel speed sensor.

    (4) 456-7990 Timing Pin

  1. Install timing pin (4) into the flywheel.

  1. Remove the valve mechanism cover.

  1. The inlet and exhaust valves for the No. 1 cylinder are fully closed if the piston is on the compression stroke and the rocker arms can be moved by hand. If the rocker arms cannot be moved and the valves are slightly open, the No. 1 piston is on the exhaust stroke.
