Alternator Mounting Modifications

Usage:

3176 (2Y6, 7LG) Truck Engines In Ford Chassis

SUPPLEMENT: 06/00/93

Truck Engine News, March 1993, Page 2, "Alternator Mounting Modification" for 3176 (2YG, 7LG) Truck Engines In Ford Chassis.

In the chart and in Step 3 and in the caption for Illustration 2, the Ford Motor Company Part Number for the Adjusting Bolt (1) is not correct. The correct Ford Motor Company Part Number for the Adjusting Bolt is F3HT-10C344-EA

--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------

Excessive alternator belt tension and/or vibrations may cause overloading of the engine front housing. This can result in cracks in the front housing where the alternator support bracket is installed. A simple modification can be made to the alternator tensioner to reduce the loads carried by the engine front housing. This modification is adaptable to all 3176 Truck Engines in Ford Chassis.

Modification Procedure

The chart lists the components required for the modification.

1. Relieve the tension on the alternator drive belt. Remove the Ford adjusting bolt (Ford Part No. E5HT-10C344-BA) that is used to apply tension to the alternator drive belt. Retain the nuts (3) used on the former adjusting bolt and the nut (4) and washers (5) used on the bolt that fastened the former adjusting bolt to the alternator support bracket.

2. Drill a 14.29 mm (.562 in) (9/16 in) hole through the Ford fan support bracket at the location shown in Illustration 1. The fan support bracket may have to be removed from the engine before the new hole is drilled.

3. Install the new adjusting bolt (1) (Ford Motor Co. Part No. F2HT-10C344 or Caterpillar Part No. 9L6371). The eye in the new adjusting bolt goes on the rear side of the fan support bracket (6) over the new hole that was drilled in Step 2. Install the new bolt (2) (Ford Motor Co. Part No. 58677-S2 or Caterpillar Part No. 0S1587) through the new hole in the fan support bracket (6) and the eye of the new adjusting bolt (1). Use the nut (4) and washers (5) that were retained to install the new bolt (2). Use nuts (3) that were retained on adjusting bolt (1).

4. Adjust the alternator drive belt tension and tighten all nuts and bolts.
