Introduction
Introduction The problem that is identified below does not have a known solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the recommendations below.
Problem
Connecting rod bearing failures have occurred in both factory new and dealer rebuilt engines. These failures resulted in connecting rod seizure. The bearing failures have been traced back to a lead-tin overlay delamination large enough that the oil film is disrupted leading to bearing adhesive failure.

The root cause has been identified as interruptions in the electrical current during the plating process. This results in poor lead-tin overlay adhesion and eventual lead-tin overlay de-bonding.
The affected date code range the supplier identified is:
- Plating Year 2008 with plating month codes: UG, UH, UI, UJ, UK and UL
- Plating Year 2009 with plating month codes: UA
Solution
If you have an engine that has suffered a bearing failure, inspect the remaining connecting rods and main bearings in the engine. Also, submit a DSN entry including the following key points in order to expedite processing of your claim:
- Engine or Machine Serial Number
- Bearings Lot Number (formatted as 5#### #### U#)
- Part picture (if possible) or Dealer report
- Engine Hours
- Parts Hours
