XQ Auto Paralleling Caterpillar

Single Unit Mode

Usage:

PMG3516 KAD

Manual Operation

The power module can be used as a stand-alone unit to power an isolated load. Manual operation refers to manually closing the circuit breaker switch for the generator. The following information describes the steps for manual operation in the single unit mode.

  1. Ensure that all load cable connections have been correctly made.

  1. Verify that the unit can be safely started.

  1. Verify that power can be applied to the load.

Pre-startup Procedures

The pre-startup procedures are to be performed by qualified personnel. Perform the following steps before the unit is started.

  1. (Optional) Turn the GPC and the UMR paralleling controls off.

Note: If the paralleling controls are turned off, the operator can adjust the frequency manually. The power module operates like a standard generator set if the paralleling controls are turned off.

  1. Install the "lead unit jumper". The lead unit jumper is connected between terminals 1UP-93 and 1UP-94 in the customer connection box. The jumper is required in order to allow the generator breaker to close in the single unit mode manual operation mode.

  1. If the Cat DVR settings are unknown, then use the Caterpillar service tool to verify the configuration of the Cat DVR. The "load compensation mode" parameter is normally set to OFF.

Startup Procedures

  1. Press the "RUN" button that is on the EMCP 3 control.

Note: The engine will begin to start immediately.

  1. Use the EMCP 3 display to observe the generator voltage and the frequency once the engine is running at the rated speed.

  1. Use the operator controls to adjust the voltage and/or the frequency if necessary.

  1. Use the circuit breaker switch to close the generator breaker at the appropriate time. Rotate the handle clockwise until the breaker closes, then release the handle. After the handle is released, the generator unit will be providing power for 100 percent of the load.

Shutdown Procedure

  1. Press "STOP" button that is on the EMCP 3.

Note: The generator breaker will open immediately. The engine will continue to run in cool down mode until the cool down time has elapsed. The engine will shut down after the cool down time has elapsed.

Automatic Operation

The power module can be used as a stand-alone unit to power an isolated load. Automatic operation refers to the use of the on-board control system to close the generator breaker automatically. The following information describes the steps for automatic operation in single unit mode.

Note: If the paralleling controls are turned off, the operator can adjust frequency manually. The power module operates like a standard generator set if the paralleling controls are turned off.

  1. Install the "lead unit jumper". The lead unit jumper is connected between terminals 1UP-93 and 1UP-94 in the customer connection box. The jumper is required in order to allow the generator breaker to close in the single unit mode automatic operation mode.

  1. Install the required wiring from the remote run request contact to terminals B- and RR if automatic remote start is required.

Note: The remote run request contact is controlled by the automatic transfer switch or by other customer supplied controls.

  1. If the Cat DVR settings are unknown, then use the Caterpillar service tool to verify the configuration of the Cat DVR. The "load compensation mode" parameter is normally set to OFF.

  1. Press the "AUTO" key that is on the EMCP 3 control panel.

Startup procedure

  1. The engine will begin starting by either of two methods.

    1. The engine can start if the remote run request contact is closed.

    1. The engine can start if the local start/stop switch is placed in the ON position.

  1. After the engine is running at the rated speed, the generator breaker will close automatically.

  1. Use the operator controls to adjust the voltage and/or the frequency if necessary. The generator unit is now providing power for 100 percent of the load.

Shutdown Procedure

  1. Any of the following methods will initiate a normal shutdown.

    1. If a remote run request contact is used to start the generator set, then open the remote run request contact.

    1. If a local start switch is used, then switch the local start/stop switch to the OFF position.

    1. If either a local or a remote start is used, then press the "STOP" button that is on the EMCP 3 control.

Note: The generator breaker will open immediately. The engine will continue to run in cool down mode until the cool down time has elapsed. Once the cool down delay has elapsed, then the engine will shut down.
