Improved Diagnostic Procedures Are Now Used to Determine Proper Belt Alignment on C9 Marine Engines {1358, 1397}

Description of Change: New diagnostic procedures are now used on the engines that are listed above in order to determine if the front drive belt is aligned properly. If the front drive belt is misaligned then an improved bracket is now used in order to correct the belt alignment.

Adaptable To:

Note: Before removing the front drive train belt for any work, first mark the belt with a arrow pointing to the engine block.

If misalignment of the belt is suspected follow the troubleshooting procedures that are listed below.

First Procedure

  1. Shut off the engine.

  1. Identify the wear mark on the smooth idler.

  1. Place a mark 3 mm (0.125 inch) wide along at least half of the smooth idler with a paint marker. Use the belt as a guide on both sides of the smooth idler.

  1. Start the engine and run the engine at idle.

  1. Observe the movement of belt. If the belt tracks over either of the marks the belt is misaligned.
Second Procedure

Spray water on the leading edge of the belt grooves that go into the crankshaft pulley. Any belt chirp that is present should cease after a short period of time.

If either of the two procedures identify a problem, replace the idler bracket in order to correct the belt alignment. Replace the old bracket with the new 192-2168 Bracket or 206-4579 Idler Bracket. Use the part number that is correct for the application. The new 192-2168 Bracket and 206-4579 Idler Bracket have tighter tolerances. The present new stock of these part numbers has replaced the old stock with the loose tolerances. The new idler brackets are adaptable back to the first production of the listed machines.

After replacement of the bracket, install the old belt with the arrow toward the engine block. Confirm that the issue has been resolved. Once the issue has been resolved install a new belt.

Note: Do not use a new belt immediately after installation of the new bracket. A new belt can possibly hide the problem for ten hours.
