NOTICE

Air locks in the cooling system can result in damage to the water pump seal causing excessive coolant leaks. To avoid damage, make sure to follow the procedure below.

  1. Fill the cooling system no faster than 19 L (5 US gal) per minute in order to avoid air locks. Do not install the filler cap.

  1. Start and run the engine at low idle for 10 minutes for the following engines: 3500, 3600, C175 and C280. Run the engine for five minutes for all other engines. Then, increase the engine rpm to high idle. Run the engine at high idle for one minute in order to purge the air from the cavities of the engine block.

  1. Stop the engine.

  1. Maintain the coolant level within 13 mm (0.5 inch) to the proper level on the sight glass (if equipped).

  1. If the gasket on the filler cap is damaged, install a new filler cap. If the gasket is not damaged, perform a pressure test with a 9S-8140 Pressurizing Pump . The correct pressure is stamped on the face of the filler cap. If the filler cap does not retain the correct pressure, install a new filler cap.

  1. Start the engine. Inspect the cooling system for leaks and for proper operating temperature.

Note: The water pump is designed to weep. The weep is necessary for lubrication of the seal face. When debris enters the seal face, weep may increase. The increased weep is only temporary. A stain or moisture on the pump housing is not indicative of pump failure. The pump should only be replaced when there is pooling of the coolant on the ground.
