CAN Data Link circuit |
The following table is a list of data link configuration status codes.
Show/hide table
Machine ECM (MID 39) | ||
---|---|---|
DTC | Code Description | System Response |
590-9 | Engine Control Module : Abnormal Update Rate | Data transmission between modules is interrupted. |
590-14 | Engine Control Module : Special Instruction | Logged events that cannot be explained |
Implement ECM (MID 82) | ||
DTC | Code Description | System Response |
1603-9 | Machine Control Module : Abnormal Update Rate | Data transmission between modules is interrupted. |
1603-14 | Machine Control Module : Special Instruction | Logged events that cannot be explained |
Note: This diagnostic code reports the data link configuration status, but not the physical condition of the data link.
Possible causes for an FMI 9 diagnostic code are:
- The Data Link circuit is open or in poor condition.
- The Machine ECM has failed.
- The Engine ECM has failed.
- Power has been interrupted to either ECM.
Possible causes for an FMI 14 diagnostic code are:
- Incorrect personality module code
- Invalid parameter configuration
- Incorrect ECM
- ECM is flashed with software that is incompatible with another ECM

Troubleshooting Test Steps | Values | Results |
---|---|---|
1. Identify the Active FMI Code Associated With the Data Link |
Code |
FMI 9 or 14 are present. Go to Step 2. |
2. Check Connections A. Inspect the circuit harness connectors. Verify that all connections are clean, secure, and in good condition. |
Connectors |
OK - Connections are good. FMI 9, go to Step 3. FMI 14, go to Step 6. Not OK - A connection problem exists. Repair: Correct any connection problem. Verify that the problem is corrected. STOP |

3. Check For an Associated FMI 9 Code A. Establish communication between the Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) and the TransmissionTM Electronic Control Module (ECM). B. Check for an associated FMI 9 code. |
Associated FMI 9 code |
OK - Associated FMI 9 code is not present. Go to Step 4. Not OK - Associated FMI 9 code is present. Repair: A. Repair all associated FMI 9 codes. See Troubleshooting, "Data Link - Test". B. If an FMI 14 code is present after resolving the FMI 9 code, go to Step 3. STOP |
4. Check the Personality Module Code for Compatibility With the Application A. Connect Cat ET. B. Select the ECM that is related to the code. C. Check for valid personality code. |
Personality code |
OK - Personality code is valid. Go to Step 5. Not OK - Personality code is not valid. Repair: A. Obtain the correct flash file. B. Flash the ECM. C. Reset all active codes and clear all logged codes. STOP |
5. Check the Configuration Parameters A. Connect Cat ET. B. Select "Configuration Parameters". C. Verify that the configuration parameters are correct. |
Configuration parameters are correct. |
OK - Configuration parameters are correct. Go to Step 6. Not OK - Configuration parameters are not correct. Repair: A. Program the parameters. B. Reset all active codes and clear all logged codes. STOP |

6. Check For Compatibility With Other ECM modules On The Data Link A. Connect Cat ET. B. Select the ECM that is related to the logged code. C. Determine if the ECM modules on the data link are compatible. Use the as shipped information found in "SIS web". |
The ECM modules are compatible. |
OK - The ECM modules are compatible. Repair: A. Contact the Technical Communicator at your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. STOP Not OK - The ECM modules are not compatible. Repair: A. Replace the incompatible ECM with the correct ECM. B. Reset all active codes and clear all logged codes. STOP |
