Connections of the Blower Motor Command |
This diagnostic code is associated with the Blower Motor Command. The FMI 06 diagnostic code is activated when the Relay Driver Module detects an above normal current for the solenoid circuit. This diagnostic code is activated on the Implement ECM via CAN Datalink.
The following conditions that cause the diagnostic code to be active are listed below:
- The energize circuit of the blower command is shorted to a ground source.
- The blower module has failed.
- The Relay Driver Module has failed. This condition is unlikely.
Note: Before performing this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in the circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Verify that all connections in the circuit are clean, that all connections are secure and that all connections are in good condition. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that this diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.
Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear these diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected.
Test Step 1. CHECK THE BLOWER DRIVER MODULE
- Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
- Observe the status of the diagnostic code.
- Disconnect the blower driver module from the machine harness.
Expected Result:
The active CID 2812 FMI 06 diagnostic code changes to a CID 2812 FMI 05 diagnostic code when the blower driver module is disconnected.
Results:
- OK - The active CID 2812 FMI 06 diagnostic code changes to a CID 2812 FMI 05 diagnostic code when the module is disconnected. The signal circuit in the machine harness is correct.
Repair: The blower driver module has failed. Repeat this test "CHECK THE BLOWER DRIVER MODULE" in order to verify the module failure. Replace the blower driver module.
STOP
- NOT OK - The CID 2812 FMI 06 diagnostic code remains active. Disconnecting the module did not change the status of the active diagnostic code. The module is not causing the problem. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Test Step 2. CHECK THE ENERGIZE CIRCUIT OF THE BLOWER MODULE FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
The blower module remains disconnected from the machine harness.
- Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the machine harness connector J1 from the RDM.
- At the machine harness connectors of the RDM, measure the resistance between the signal contact J1-15 (wire C584-WH(White)) and frame ground. Measure the resistance between the signal contact J1-15 (wire C584-WH(White)) and each of the other circuits that are used in J1 RDM connector.
- While the resistance measurements are observed, perform the following:
- Wiggle the machine harness connectors for the RDM.
- Wiggle the machine harness connectors for the blower module.
- Gently pull on the wires and wiggle the wires.
Expected Result:
Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms at all times during the manipulation of the harness and connectors.
Results:
- OK - Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 3.
- NOT OK - One or more of the resistance measurements is less than 5000 ohms. The resistance measurement is indicating that a short is present in the machine harness. The short is between the wire C584-WH(White) and the frame ground or the short is between the wire C584-WH(White) and the circuit with the low resistance measurement.
Repair: For information on testing for short circuits and finding short circuits, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Wiring Harness (Short Circuit) - Test". Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
STOP
Test Step 3. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE
- Inspect the harness connectors. Clean the contacts of the harness connectors. Check the wires for damage to the insulation that can be caused by excessive heat, battery acid, or chafing.
- Perform a
45 N (10 lb) pull test at the connectors that are used in the circuit. - Reconnect all harness connectors. Make sure that the connectors are fully seated and locked.
- Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
- Check the status of the CID 2812 FMI 06 diagnostic code.
Expected Result:
The CID 2812 FMI 06 diagnostic code is still active.
Results:
- OK - The CID 2812 FMI 06diagnostic code is still active. The diagnostic code has not been corrected.
Repair: If available, perform a Wiggle Test on the machine wiring harness with the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (CAT ET) service tool. The Wiggle Test can detect the following in the machine wiring harness:
- Momentary shorts
- Intermittent shorts
- Opens
Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact the Technical Communicator at your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may effect repair time. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found and the ECM must be replaced, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".
STOP
- NOT OK - The CID 2812 FMI 06 is not active. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time.
Repair: The initial diagnostic code could have been caused by a poor electrical connection or short at a harness connector that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.
