Bracket Added To The Watercooled Exhaust Manifold Group To Help Support Turbocharger{1059}

Usage:

3516 Industrial ( 27Z ),
Marine ( 29Z ) And Generator Set ( 25Z ) Engines

Description of Change: A bracket has been added to the watercooled exhaust manifold group used on the above 3516 Engines. The new bracket fits between the right side exhaust manifold outlet flange and the flywheel housing. The new bracket will help reduce the stress that can crack the weld in the rear portion of the right side exhaust manifold. It will also help support and reduce vibration of the turbocharger. Some material has been added to the manifold outlet flange to attach the new bracket.

Adaptable As: The new components of the 1W5937 Manifold Group are listed in the chart. The new components, when used together are a direct replacement for the former manifold. The location of the new components are shown in Illustration 3.

The new 7C700 Bracket Assembly can be added to earlier engines if the exhaust manifold is modified. See the procedure that follows.

Procedure To Modify Right Hand Exhaust Manifold

1. Remove the right hand turbocharger.

2. Make a plate from high strength structural steel as shown in Illustration 1.

3. Weld the plate (made in Step 2) to the right side exhaust manifold outlet flange as shown in Illustrations 2 and 3.

NOTE: Be sure the welder is grounded to the right side exhaust manifold when welding the plate to the manifold. Do not ground the welder to the cylinder block or frame rails because electrical arcing may damage the engine bearings.

4. Install the 7C700 Bracket Assembly on the flywheel housing with two 6H1717 Bolts and two 5P1076 Washers. See Illustration 4. Use the 7C700 Bracket Assembly as a template to mark the location of the holes on the plate that was welded to the manifold.

5. Remove the 7C700 Bracket Assembly from the flywheel housing.

6. Drill two 8.20 mm (.323") diameter holes through the plate at the locations marked in Step 4. Tap the two holes for 3/8" -16 threads.

7. Install the 7C700 Bracket Assembly on the flywheel housing. Fasten the bracket assembly to the exhaust manifold with two L1351 Bolts and two 9L9132 Washers.
