Start By:

  1. Release the hydraulic system oil pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "System Pressure - Release".

  2. Remove the center drive shaft. Refer to Power Train, "Drive Shaft (Center) - Remove and Install".


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Install Tooling (A) under the front frame, as shown. Refer to Tool Operating Manual, NEHS1303, "Lift Group (Stand - 25 Ton)" for more information on Tooling (A).

  2. Disconnect hose (1). Remove bolts (2) and remove the rear wiper arm (3).

  3. Remove the front mounting bolts (4) for the cab.

  4. Install Tooling (B) to the front of cab, as shown. Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (B) and raise the front of the cab.

  5. Remove the cab mount. Install a 76 mm (3 inch) block of wood (5) on both sides of the cab. Rest the cab on wood blocks (5).

  6. Remove bolts (6) and remove strip (7). Pull mat (8) toward the rear of the cab.

  7. Disconnect harness assembly (9). Remove clamp (10). Remove bolt (11). Use Tooling (C) (not shown) to remove pin (12) from the upper hitch.

  8. Remove bolts (13) and the washers from the rod end of both steering cylinders. Use Tooling (C) (not shown) to remove the pins (not shown) from the rod end of the steering cylinders.

  9. Disconnect hose assemblies (14) that connect the front frame to the rear frame.

  10. Remove bolt (15). Disconnect steering shaft (16).

  11. Install blocks (17) between the rear axle and the frame to prevent the rear axle from oscillating.

  12. Attach a suitable lift truck to the rear frame, as shown. Use a chain (18) to connect the rear frame to the lift truck, as shown.

  13. Remove bolts (21) and (24). Remove plate (23) and shims (22). Use Tooling (C) to remove lower pin assembly (19). Remove spacer (20).

  14. Raise the cab and remove the wood blocks that were installed in step 5. Lower the cab and install the cab mounting bolts that were removed in step 3. Leave the suitable lifting device connected to the top of the cab.

  15. Use the suitable lifting device to apply slight upward pressure to the cab. Use the suitable lifting device that is connected to the cab and the lift truck to slowly separate rear frame (25) from the front frame. Support the front of rear frame (25) on Tooling (D), as shown. Support the rear of the rear frame (25) by using Tooling (E) and (F).

  16. Remove the upper sleeve bearings (26) in the rear frame by using Tooling (G).

  17. Remove bolts (27). Remove caps (28) and (36). Remove shims (30). Remove seals (29) and (35) from caps (28) and (36).

  18. Use Tooling (J) to remove the upper hitch bearings (31), (32), (33), and (34).

  19. Remove spacer (38). Remove bolts (37). Remove caps (39) and (47). Remove shims (36). Remove seals (41) and (48) from caps (39) and (47).

  20. Use Tooling (H) to remove the lower hitch bearings (42), (43), (44), and (45).
