The Caterpillar Electronic Service Technician (CAT ET) may display an unknown 1684-14 diagnostic fault code. The service manuals may not adequately describe this fault code. The 1684-14 diagnostic fault code will not have any effect on the performance of the engine. When there is an actual fault, the 1684-14 code will be accompanied by a 174-02 code and/or a 320-02 code. The 174-02 code may cause the engine to have low power. If the 320-02 code is active, the Electronic Control Module (ECM) will limit the engine to 1200 rpm. When the 1684-14 code is the only displayed fault code, this fault code can be cleared from the diagnostic screen. A software update is currently in progress which will eliminate the nuisance alarms of the 1684-14 code.
