Start By:

  1. Remove the front housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Housing (Front) - Remove".

  2. Remove the flywheel housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel Housing - Remove and Install".

  3. Remove the crankshaft front seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Front Seal - Remove".

  4. Remove the crankshaft rear seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Rear Seal - Remove".

Note: Put identification marks on the engine block, main bearing caps, and main bearings during the removal procedure. Identification marks will ensure proper installation during the installation procedure.

Note: Put identification marks on the connecting rods, connecting rod bearing caps, and connecting rod bearings during the removal procedure. Identification marks will ensure proper installation during the installation procedure.


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.


  1. Position the engine on Tooling (A).

  2. Remove bolts (2).

  3. Remove connecting rod caps (1).

  4. Push the piston assemblies toward the cylinder heads.

  5. Ensure that Timing Marks “V” are aligned on idler gear (4) and crankshaft gear (3).

  6. Remove bolts (5). Remove main bearing caps (6).

  7. Remove thrust plates (7) from the center main bearings.

  8. Install Tooling (B) on each end of the crankshaft.

  9. Attach a suitable lifting device to crankshaft (8). The weight of crankshaft (8) is approximately 215 kg (475 lb). Remove crankshaft (8).

  10. Use Tooling (C) to remove crankshaft gear (3). Use Tooling (D) to remove the dowel that is under crankshaft gear (3) if a replacement is necessary.

  11. Remove pin (9) from the crankshaft with Tooling (D) if the pin is worn or damaged.
