Start By:

  1. Remove the fixed axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fixed Axle (Front) - Remove and Install".
  2. Remove the oscillating axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Oscillating Axle (Rear) - Remove and Install".

Note: The axle housing assemblies that are used in the front fixed axle and in the rear oscillating axle are similar. Therefore, both axle housing assemblies can be disassembled in the same manner.

  1. Install the axle assembly on Tooling (B) in a vertical position.

Note: Carefully remove the axle housing assembly. Part of the wear gauge pin will remain in the axle housing assembly. The pin will remain in the axle housing assembly. The spring and the piston will remain in the differential housing.

  1. Fasten Tooling (A) and a hoist to the rim of the axle shaft. Remove bolts (1) that secure axle housing assembly (2) to the differential housing. Carefully remove the axle housing assembly. The weight of axle housing assembly (2) is 365 kg (800 lb).

Note: The brake assemblies that are part of the fixed axle and the oscillating axle are similar. Therefore, both brake assemblies can be disassembled in the same manner.

  1. Remove sun gear (3) .

    Illustration 3g00451327

  1. Remove reaction plate (4) .

  1. Remove two springs (5) .

  1. If necessary, remove two dowels (6) and dowel (12) .

Note: Pin (9) , O-ring seal (8) , and hollow dowel (7) will remain in the axle housing assembly.

  1. Remove spring (10) and cup (11) .

  1. Remove two friction disc (13) , and reaction plate (14) .

    ------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from air pressure against the brake piston.

The brake piston can come out of the differential housing assembly with force when applying air pressure.

To prevent possible personal injury, the brake piston must be retained in the differential housing assembly when applying air pressure.

    ----------------------

  1. Retain brake piston (15) . Apply shop air pressure to the fitting for the brake line. The correct air pressure is approximately 525 kPa (75 psi). Brake piston (15) will move out of the differential housing.

  1. Remove seal (16) and seal (17) from the differential housing.

  1. Remove bolt (19) and plug (18) from the flange face of the axle housing. Remove pin (9) , O-ring seal (8) , and dowel (7) from axle housing (2) .

  1. Repeat Steps 1 through 11 for the remaining service brake.

Installation Procedure

Required Tools
Tool     Part Number     Part Description     Qty
A     138-7573     Link Bracket     2

  1. Thoroughly clean the parts of the service brakes.

Note: When brake service is required, replace both friction discs. Replace all piston seals and all retraction springs. Inspect all surfaces for wear. Replace components, as required. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, RENR2112, "966G Wheel Loader and 972G Wheel Loader" for further information.

  1. Apply 8C-8422 RTV Silicone Sealant to dowel (7) . Install dowel (7) . Seat dowel (7) in the bottom of the bore.

  1. Apply clean SAE 30W power train oil to O-ring seal (8) . Install O-ring seal (8) and install pin (9) .

    Illustration 6g00451327

  1. If necessary, install dowels (6) and (12) . Seat the dowels in the bottom of the bores.

  1. Install seal (16) and seal (17) .

  1. Apply petroleum jelly to seal (16) and seal (17) .

  1. Apply clean hydraulic oil to piston (15) .

Note: Install piston (15) evenly. Twisting or binding of the piston may cause seal damage.

  1. Install piston (15) in the differential housing assembly.

Note: Using a friction disc with less than 2.81 mm (0.11063 inch) of friction material will result in accelerated wear. Do not use the color of the friction disc as an indication of wear. The overall thickness and disc groove depth are better indications of wear.

  1. Inspect friction disc (13) for wear. Replace the friction disc if the thickness of the friction material is less than 2.81 mm (0.11063 inch). Immerse the friction discs in clean SAE 30W oil. Install friction disc (13) , reaction plate (14) , and friction disc (13) .

  1. Install cup (11) and spring (10) .

  1. Install two springs (5) .

  1. Install reaction plate (4) .

  1. Install sun gear (3) .

    Illustration 8g00451163

  1. Apply 6V-6640 RTV Silicone Sealant on the mating surfaces of the axle housing and differential housing.

  1. Fasten Tooling (A) and a hoist to the rim of the axle shaft. Carefully install the axle housing assembly. The weight of axle housing assembly (2) is 365 kg (800 lb).

    Illustration 9g00450664

  1. Install bolts (1) that secure axle housing assembly (2) to the differential housing. The torque for bolts (1) is 300 ± 40 N·m (220 ± 30 lb ft).

Note: If you install new service brakes, record the new dimension for the service brake wear indicator. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7035, "966G Wheel Loader and 972G Wheel Loader" for further information.

  1. Record the new dimension for the service brake wear indicator.

  1. Repeat Steps 1 through 17 for the remaining service brake.

End By:

  1. Install the fixed axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fixed Axle (Front) - Remove and Install".
  2. Install the oscillating axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Oscillating Axle (Rear) - Remove and Install".
