(B) Dimension Bequals the clearance between the slipper and the wear plate.

Dimension B ... 0.09 ± 0.04 mm (.004 ± .002 inch)

Install the 8J-0217 Shims and 8J-0218 Shims, as required. Make sure that the clearance between the slipper and the wear plate equals dimension B. Measure the clearance at 120 degree intervals.

(7) Torque for the eight bolts ... 30 ± 7 N·m (22 ± 5 lb ft)

(8) 8J-0217 Shim

Thickness of one shim ... 0.05 mm (.002 inch)

(9) 8J-0218 Shim

Thickness of one shim ... 0.12 mm (.005 inch)

(10) Lubricate the sealing lips with a minimal amount of the lubricant that is being sealed.

(11) Lubricate the sealing lips with a minimal amount of the lubricant that is being sealed.

Shaft Bearing Setting Check

  1. Perform this procedure when the following parts of the pump are replaced: shaft bearings, shaft, head and body.

Note: Do not install the barrel assembly or pistons for this procedure.

  1. Install the bearing cones on the shaft and install the bearing cups in the body and in the head. Make sure that the bearing cups and bearing cones are against the location shoulders.

  1. Install the shaft in the body.

  1. Install the head and the head gasket on the body. Tighten the head bolts.

  1. Lubricate all the rotating parts of the pump prior to rotating the shaft.

  1. Rotate the shaft with a torque wrench. The breakaway torque can not exceed 54 N·m (40 lb ft). The continuous rotating torque can not exceed 37 N·m (27 lb ft).

  1. Position a dial indicator in order to measure axial shaft end play.

  1. Rotate the shaft back and forth through 40 degrees of travel and adjust the dial indicator to zero.

  1. Apply a 5340 N (1200 lb) force on the shaft. Rotate the shaft back and forth through 40 degrees of travel. Make sure that the dial indicator is contacting the shaft in the same position as Step 8. Record the dial indicator reading while the shaft is turning.

  1. Remove the 5340 N (1200 lb) force from the shaft. Rotate the shaft back and forth through 40 degrees of travel. Record the dial indicator reading while the shaft is turning. The dial indicator must register zero in contact with the shaft at the same position as Step 8. If the dial indicator does not register zero, repeat Steps 8 through 10.

  1. If the dial indicator reading is 0.08 mm (.003 inch) to 0.30 mm (.012 inch) assembly can be completed. The dial indicator reading that was recorded in Step 9 must not exceed 0.33 mm (.013 inch). If the dial indicator measurement from Step 9 is less than 0.05 mm (.002 inch), then complete Steps 13 through 17.

  1. If the dial indicator measurement from Step 9 exceeds 0.33 mm (.013 inch), insert 0.25 mm (.010 inch) shims between the head and the cover. Repeat Steps 8 through 10. The dial indicator measurement from Step 9 must not exceed 0.33 mm (.013 inch).

  1. Insert 0.25 mm (.010 inch) shims between the body and the head. Tighten the head bolts.

  1. Rotate the shaft back and forth through 40 degrees of travel and adjust the dial indicator to zero.

  1. Apply a force of 5340 N (1200 lb) on the shaft. Rotate the shaft back and forth through 40 degrees of travel. Make sure that the dial indicator is contacting the shaft in the same position as Step 14. Record the reading of the dial indicator while the shaft is turning.

Note: The dial indicator must register at least 0.28 mm (.011 inch) during Step 15.

  1. Remove the force of 5340 N (1200 lb) from the shaft. Rotate the shaft back and forth through 40 degrees of travel. Record the dial indicator reading while the shaft is turning. The dial indicator must register zero in contact with the shaft at the same position as Step 14. If the dial indicator does not register zero, repeat Steps 14 through 16.

  1. Remove the shims and torque the head bolts.
