Problem

Changes have been made to improve the service life of 518 Winches on certain
518 Skidders.
Segment A: An improved bearing replaces the former bearing used on the input
clutch shaft. A new gear with wider teeth and improved support (2 bearings)
replaces the former gear that has failed under high loads. A new
shaft, spacer, hub, and housing are also added to facilitate the new gear
design. The clutch manifold and spring retainer are reworked; and the
assembly method has been modified to insure sufficient retraction and
clamping force of the clutch.
Segment B: An improved shifting fork, improved coupler, and springs with
heavier loads replace the former shifting fork, coupler, and springs in the
freespool mechanism. A cover is also reworked to accommodate the new
freespool mechanism. A cover is also reworked to facilitate the new
freespool mechanism. The gear can be replaced if damaged.
Segment C: A new drum shaft with improved bending strength replaces the
former shaft. New double lip drum seals replace the former single lip seals.
A new gear and sleeve are also added and the retainer is reworked to
accommodate the new seal design. A new drum drag brake plug made of material
that is more resistant to swelling in the presence of oil will replace the
former plug. A new drum with thicker flanges and larger drum diameter
replaces the former drum. (Note: The drum change is optional.)
Segment D: A higher capacity one-way clutch replaces the former one-way
clutch. A new support is used to accommodate the new one-way clutch. A new
bevel gear/brake shaft uses a longer bolt to fasten an improved viscous brake
disc and a new reaction plate to the brake shaft. The new viscous brake
reaction plate is fastened to a new one-way clutch hub with a dowel to
prevent rotation of the plate that may have previously contributed to bolt
loosening. The former piston is reworked to prevent sticking.
Segment E: A new bevel gear/brake shaft uses a larger diameter bolt to
fasten the gear/bearing retainer plate to the shaft. The former bolt
experienced loosening/breaking. A new plate and cage is also added to
facilitate the new bolt design.
Segment F: An improved pinion and bevel gear replaces the former pinion gear
and bevel gear which experienced gear tooth pitting and wear in certain
applications. The new pinion was also redesigned to prevent axial movement
of the pinion.
Segment G: Reinforcement of the case assembly will prevent case assembly
deflections that caused drum shaft breaking and improve pinion service life.
Segment H: An improved spring replaces the former spring in the power train
oil system priority valve. The former spring could relax and cause low winch
control pressure.
