Usage:
VIMS
VIMS Display Components
(1) Alert indicator. (2) Data logging indicator. (3) Message area. (4) Universal gauge. (5) Gauge warning area.
Most all VIMS system events are delayed eight seconds from the beginning of the event until it is displayed. Any system event shown in the event list will include this eight seconds in the event duration. System events originating in controls other than VIMS are delayed within that controls' software. VIMS will then immediately show an event as soon as that event is shown in the control of origin.
ACTIVE system events are shown in message area (3). A system event is specified by showing that a parameter has an ERROR and instructions for the operator like CALL SHOP. If multiple ACTIVE system events are present, each will be scrolled in the message area in three second intervals. The following is an example of the engine oil pressure circuit having an error.
Pressing the <F1> key toggles the display to show (on line two) the MID, CID and FMI codes for the system event. Example:
There are two off-board electronic service tools that can be used to obtain service codes on the 994D Wheel Loaders. They are Caterpillar Electronic Technician (CAT ET) and VIMS-PC. CAT ET and VIMS-PC are laptop computer based tools which are used to diagnose and troubleshoot various electronic systems on the 994D Wheel Loaders. VIMS is the on-board tool that can be used to obtain service codes.
Caterpillar Electronic Technician
(1) IBM® compatible computer (refer to note below).
(2) 7X-1688 Cable (RS232 connection cable).
(3) Cat Electronic Technician software.
(4) 139-4166 Cable.
(5) 7X-1700 Communication Adapter (with NEXG4523 Communication Adapter Software installed).
(6) Connect to service connector on machine.
ET Computer Hardware And Software
NOTE: Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) is a software program that runs on an IBM® compatible personal computer. To use Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET), order ET Single Use Program License software, JERD2124; the information and requirements sheet, JEHP1026; the RS232 connection cable, 7X-1688 and the Data Subscription, JERD2142. The requirements and information sheet lists the hardware required and the features of ET.
The service tool ET is not needed to determine or clear service codes, but it makes the tasks easier and faster. ET can also show status information of certain system parameters like: lift linkage position or clutch pressure. This feature along with the ability to display service code history information, make ET a useful troubleshooting tool.
ET connects to the service tool connector which is round and has 9 contacts. The diagnostic service tool connector has two locations on the machine, one is in the cab and the other is on the right side of the machine just behind the electronics bay. For more information, refer to the topic Electrical Component And Connector Locations in this manual and the Electrical System Schematic in the machine Service Manual.
To use the ET service tool, choose the MACHINE FUNCTIONS option from the main menu. The next menu is a list of the Electronic Control Modules (ECM) installed on the machine.
NOTE: If guidance with ET is needed, you can use the program's HELP Function Screen that leads you step-by-step through every task ET can perform.
VIMS-PC
(1) IBM® compatible computer.
(2) VIMS-PC software.
(3) Service tool cable.
