After the fuel injector timing is set, the synchronization pin is used to set the fuel control linkage to a reference position. This constant reference position is used to synchronize the fuel injector racks. This constant reference position is also used to adjust the linkage rod that is connecting the governor output to the control housing. This constant reference position is also used to check the screw for the fuel rack stop and this constant reference position is used to make adjustments to the screw for the fuel rack stop.

  1. Remove the synchronization pin (2) from the storage location for the synchronization pin.

  1. Remove the cover for the rack stop (1) .

  1. Remove the copper washer from the synchronization pin (2). Thread the synchronization pin into hole (3) .

    Tighten the synchronization pin (2) to the following torque. ... 10 ± 2 N·m (89 ± 18 lb in)

Note: Each engine has a custom synchronization pin. The length of the synchronization pin is stamped into the rear housing. Do not substitute a synchronization pin from one engine to another engine. If the synchronization pin is lost, the synchronization pin must be replaced by a synchronization pin that is the correct length.

    (4) Fuel control lever

  1. Rotate the fuel control shaft and the fuel control lever (4) until the fuel stop lever comes in contact with the synchronization pin. This is the reference point of synchronization or the zero reference point. Hold the fuel control linkage firmly in this position while the fuel injector control linkages are adjusted.

Note: It is important to exert a firm, steady force on the linkage while you are making the adjustments. Do not use excessive force. The 1U-9361 Governor Torque Arm is a useful tool that can be used to apply the correct amount of force on the shaft.

  1. Remove the valve covers.

    ------ WARNING! ------

The engine may overspeed due to incorrect assembly or adjustment.

Engine overspeed could result in personal injury, loss of life and/or property damage.

Be prepared to stop the engine by activating the engine shutdown system or closing the air inlet lines.

    ----------------------

  1. With the fuel stop lever against the synchronization pin (2), put the 6V-9057 Rack Synchronizing Gauge (6) on the round part of the fuel injector rack. The 6V-9057 Rack Synchronizing Gauge should be placed between the trim screw of the fuel injector and the end of the rack. Use a screwdriver and make an adjustment of the rod assembly (5). Turn the screw on the rod assembly (5) by one click at a time. Continue to adjust the rod assembly until the rack synchronizing gauge (6) barely fits between the fuel injector body and the shoulder at the end of the rack. Remove the screwdriver from the rod assembly so that no pressure is put on the linkage. There can be no pressure on the linkage while the setting is being checked with the rack synchronizing gauge. Any pressure on the linkage with the screwdriver will not give a correct indication when the setting is checked with the rack synchronizing gauge. In order to ensure that the linkage is free and that the linkage is giving the correct setting, rotate the linkage and check the setting again.

Note: If the rod assembly (5) can not be adjusted, the fuel control rods will need to be adjusted. See Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel Control Linkage Adjustment".

  1. Use the rack synchronizing gauge (6) and adjust the remaining fuel injector racks on the right side of the engine. Recheck the fuel injector racks and adjust the fuel injector racks, as required.

  1. Repeat Steps 4 through 7 for the fuel injector racks on the left side of the engine.
