Fluid Spillage Containment

Care must be taken to ensure that the fluids are contained during performance of the inspection, the maintenance, the testing, the adjusting and the repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to the "Tools And Shop Products Guide, NENG2500" the tools and the supplies suitable to collect and contain any of the fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of the fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Thoroughly clean around the mounting area of the swing drive prior to the removal steps.

2. Drain the oil from the swing drive in a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the swing drive is 8 liters (2.1 U.S. gal).

3. Use Tooling (A) to remove 12 bolts (1) that hold the swing drive to the main frame.

4. Fasten Tooling (B) and a hoist to swing drive (2) as shown.

5. Remove the two corks from the threaded holes in the swing drive housing. Install a 24 mm x 130 mm Forcing Screw (3) in each threaded hole in the swing drive housing. Tighten the forcing screws evenly to separate the swing drive from the main frame.

6. Remove swing drive (2) from the machine. The weight of the swing drive is 226 kg (495 lb).

NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the swing drive.

7. Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the main frame and the swing drive housing.

8. Put Loctite C5A for North America and Loctite 8008 for EAME on the locating pin in the main frame.

9. Put Loctite 5127 on the mating surface of the main frame and the swing drive housing.

NOTE: During the installation, the locating pin for the swing drive may come out of the swing drive housing.

10. Fasten Tooling (B) and a hoist swing drive (2). Put the swing drive in its original position in the main frame. If the locating pin comes out of the swing drive housing, it can be reinstalled with a hammer after the swing drive is in place.

11. Put Loctite 243 on the threads of 12 bolts (1). Install the 12 bolts and washers that hold the swing drive in place. Tighten the bolts evenly with Tooling (A) to a torque of 520 ± 70 N·m (384 ± 52 lb ft.).

12. Reinstall the two corks in the threaded holes in the swing drive housing.

NOTE: Refer to the topic "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" in the "Operation & Maintenance Manual" for the proper filling procedure and the proper levels for the hydraulic system and the swing drive.

13. After the installation of the swing motor, fill the hydraulic oil tank and the swing drive with oil to the correct level.
