D349 INDUSTRIAL & MARINE ENGINES Caterpillar

Right Front Cylinder Head Assembly

Usage:

Remove Right Front Cylinder Head Assembly

preparatory steps:

a) remove fuel injection lines (right side only)

b) remove right front camshaft housing

c) remove expansion tank (Marine engines only)

d) remove oil filter housing

e) remove right water cooled exhaust manifold (Marine engines only)

1. Loosen water ferrule clamp (1). Remove two fuel injection pump housing-to-cylinder head bracket mounting bolts (2).

2. Disconnect water temperature sending unit (4). Disconnect safety shutoff oil lines (5) and (6). Disconnect left aftercooler water elbow (3).

3. Remove expansion tank bottom support braces, on Marine engines only.

4. Remove water bypass line (7). Remove fuel transfer pump bleed line (9). Disconnect water lines (10) and (11) from lower housing. Attach hoist and remove six lower housing mounting bolts (8). Remove regulator housing assembly-weight 140 lbs. (64 kg).

5. Remove three exhaust manifold adapter retaining bolts (12) on Industrial engines only.

6. Remove right rear valve cover. Remove the cylinder head mounting bolts and washers. Install three 3/8"-16NC forged eyebolts in head assembly. Attach a hoist and remove the cylinder head assembly-weight 300 lbs. (136 kg). Remove the water ferrule assembly.

NOTE: Always replace the gasket between spacer plate and cylinder block before reinstalling cylinder head assembly. See REMOVE SPACER PLATES.

Install Right Front Cylinder Head Assembly

1. Clean the top surface of spacer plate and mating surface of cylinder head. Install a new head gasket and seals (1).

NOTE: Be sure the gasket between spacer plate and cylinder block has been replaced before installing cylinder head assembly. Refer to REMOVE AND INSTALL SPACER PLATES.

2. Attach a hoist and position the cylinder head assembly on dowels and orifice (2).

3. Install the water ferrule, seal and clamp (3). Do not tighten the bolt in the clamp.

4. Put 9M3710 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads of the cylinder head mounting bolts and the exhaust manifold adapter bolts.

5. Install the cylinder head mounting bolts and washers. Tighten the bolts in the following Step sequence:

1 Tighten all bolts in numerical order to 175 lb.ft. (24.2 mkg).

2 Retighten all bolts in numerical order to 250 lb.ft. (34.6 mkg).

3 Finally retighten all bolts by hand in numerical order to 250 lb.ft. (34.6 mkg).

4 Again tighten bolt (9) between the two heads to 250 ± 10 lb.ft. (34.6 ± 1.38 mkg).

6. Tighten the bolt in the clamp for the water ferrule and seal assembly (3) to 30 ± 5 lb.in. (34.56 ± 5.76 cm.kg).

NOTICE

Do not tighten the bolt more than the specification. If the bolt is tightened more, the seal will be damaged.

7. Install a new gasket, and install the exhaust manifold adapter retaining bolts. Tighten the bolt in the clamp for the water ferrule and seal to 30 ± 5 lb.in. (34.56 ± 5.76 cm.kg).

NOTICE

Do not tighten the bolt more than the specification. If the bolt is tightened more, the seal will be damaged.

8. Attach a hoist and position regulator housing assembly (4) on the engine. Install the six retaining bolts.

9. Connect water temperature regulator housing lower water lines. Install fuel transfer pump bleed line. Install the water bypass line (5). Connect left aftercooler water elbow. Connect safety shutoff oil lines. Connect water temperature sending unit. Install the expansion tank bottom support braces on Marine engines only.

10. Install the fuel injection pump housing-to-cylinder head bracket retaining bolts. Install right rear valve cover.

concluding steps:

a) install oil filter housing

b) install right water cooled exhaust manifold (Marine engines only)

c) install expansion tank (Marine engines only)

d) install right front camshaft housing

e) install fuel injection lines (right side only)
