An Improved Fan Drive Assembly is Now Used on Certain 777F Off-Highway Trucks {1359} Caterpillar

Description Of Change: An improved fan drive assembly is adaptable to the machines listed above. The fan drive assembly has improved internal bearings to withstand the radial load and to improve the fan drive life. The fan drive also includes an improved shaft seal to provide better performance in cold ambient temperatures.

New 513-9272 Fan Drive Gp (1) replaces the former 243-1872 Fan Drive Gp in the fan drive arrangement.

New fan drive group (1) is adaptable to the machines within the listed serial numbers, and is effective in production with all the machines after the listed serial numbers.

Use the rework procedure below to install fan drive group (1) in the fan drive arrangement.

Accidental engine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the equipment. To avoid accidental engine starting, disconnect the battery cable from the negative (−) battery terminal. Completely tape all metal surfaces of the disconnected battery cable end in order to prevent contact with other metal surfaces which could activate the engine electrical system. Place a Do Not Operate tag at the Start/Stop switch location to inform personnel that the equipment is being worked on.

Before service work is begun, park the machine on a hard level surface. Block the wheels of the machine so unexpected movement will not occur. Unexpected movement of the machine can cause personal injury or death.

1. Prepare the machine for maintenance.

   Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "777F OEM Off-Highway Truck".

2. Remove and retain fan guard (A) and belt guard (B) from the fan drive arrangement.

   Reference: Refer to Fan-Remove and InstallDisassembly and Assembly, KENR8184-00, "777F OEM Off-Highway Truck Engine Supplement".

3. Use a suitable lifting device to remove and retain fan spider assembly (C). The approximate weight of fan spider assembly (C) is 55 kg (121 lb).

4. Remove fan pulley (D), fan belt (E) as shown in Illustration 3. Retain fan pulley (D), mounting hardware, and fan belt (E).

5. Remove and discard fan adapter (G). Remove and discard fan drive group (F) using a suitable lifting device.

6. Use a suitable lifting device to remove and discard fan drive group (F). The approximate weight of fan drive group (F) is 39 kg (86 lb).

   Note: Install and orientate hydraulic fittings before installing the fan drive group (1) to the engine.

7. Use a suitable lifting device to position fan drive group (1) secure into position using four bolts (2) and four washers (3) as shown in Illustration 5. The approximate weight of fan drive group (1) is 49 kg (108 lb).

8. Reconnect hydraulic plumbing to fan drive assembly.

9. Install fan pulley (D), fan belt (E) using the hardware retained in Step 4.

10. Install three spacers (4) onto the fan drive group.

11. Attach a suitable lifting device to fan spider assembly (C). The approximate weight of fan spider assembly (C) is 31 kg (67 lb).3

12. Position fan spider assembly (C) and secure using eight bolts (5) and eight washers (6). Refer to Illustration 9.

13. Install fan guard (A) and belt guard (B) into the machine that were saved in Step 2.
