Sudden movement or accidental starting of the machine can cause personal injury or death to persons on or near the machine. To prevent personal injury or death, perform the following: Park the machine on a smooth, level surface. Lower the work tool to the ground and engage the parking brake. Stop the engine and remove the key. Block the wheels and install the steering frame lock. |

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
The recommended level of cleanliness for the hydraulic system is ISO Code 18/15. See Table 1 for the maximum allowable particle count.
Hydraulic Oil Contamination | ||
ISO Code | Particle Size (Microns) | Maximum Number of Particles Per 1 mL Samples |
18 | 6 | 2500 |
15 | 14 | 320 |
Note: The concentration of the particles by size should be monitored over a series of samples. This information can be used to spot abnormal wear before a failure occurs. A spectrographic analysis of the samples can be used to identify the composition of the particles. The analysis of the oil sample may be used to identify the components that are failing.
If the hydraulic oil becomes contaminated, premature component failure could result. Contaminated hydraulic oil can also contribute to overheating.
Effective fluid cleanliness management is the single most important factor and single greatest opportunity to maximize component life, and:
- Increase component reliability and durability
- Lower component life cycle costs
Scheduled Oil Sampling (SOS) Services is a highly recommended process for Caterpillar customers to use to minimize owning and operating costs. Customers provide oil samples, coolant samples, and other vehicle information. The dealer uses the data to provide the customer with recommendations for management of the equipment. SOS Services can help detect a potential problem before a failure and help determine the cause. Your Cat dealer may administer an Extended Oil Drain program with a Customer Support Agreement (CSA) based on routine Scheduled Oil Sampling (SOS) results and the use of genuine Cat parts, fluids, and Scheduled Maintenance Services.
The following items should be procured before beginning this test:
Required Tools | ||
Part Number | Description | Quantity |
8T-9208 | Probe Assembly | 1 |
8T-9190 | Fluid Sampling Bottle | 1 |
- Start the engine and run the engine at high idle. Allow the oil temperature to reach the normal operating temperature.
- Actuate all cylinders through a minimum of ten full cycles.
- Lower the work tools to the ground.
- Stop the engine.
Use the following procedure to sample the oil in the hydraulic system.
- Release the pressure in the hydraulic system.
Reference: For additional information about the release of hydraulic oil pressure, refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced.
Show/hide tableIllustration 1 g06192397 Location of the Hydraulic Oil Sampling Port (see arrow) - Make sure that the control lever is in the HOLD position.
Note: The fluid sampling port is on the right side of the machine in front of the hydraulic tank.
- Purge the hydraulic oil sampling port. Insert an 8T-9208 Probe Assembly into the hydraulic oil sampling port.
Note: Use approximately
150 mm (6 inch) length of tube on the end of the probe. Drain approximately100 mL (4 fl oz) of oil into a container for disposal. This process will clean out the sampling port so that a good oil sample may be obtained.Reference: Refer to Special Publication, PEHP6001, "How To Take A Good Oil Sample" for more information about obtaining an oil sample.
- Start the engine and allow the engine to run at low idle.
Note: Do not operate the hydraulic controls.
- Install a clean tube to draw oil sample from the fluid sampling valve. Use an 8T-9190 Fluid Sampling Bottle to take the hydraulic oil sample.
- Use a screwdriver or a wrench to open the fluid sampling valve.
Note: Be prepared to close the valve when the appropriate sample level has been drawn.
- Draw a
50 mL (2 fl oz) oil sample from the fluid sampling valve.
Submit the sample for analysis by a Caterpillar technician.
Review the Scheduled Oil Sampling (SOS) report and recommendations based on the report.
The level of contaminants must be lower than the values in Table 1.
