NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

  1. If any parts are worn or damage, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

  11. Install upper bearing cage (16) onto the lower bearing cage. Install bolts (15).

    Illustration 9g06126623

  12. Perform the following procedure for setting the bearing preload.

    1. Install notched washers (13) and lock nut (12).

    2. Use Tooling (D) to tighten lock nut (12) to a rolling torque of 0.7 to 1.2 N·m (6.2 to 10.6 lb in).

    3. Rotate the pinion several times to ensure that the bearings are fully seated.

    4. Install locking washer so that the tabs line up with the notches on the notched washer. Locking washer has eight different positions to align the tabs with the notches in the notched washer. If locking washer does not fully align with the notched washer, position locking washer so that locking washer is very close to fitting into the notches of the notched washer. Tighten the locknut until locking washer fits into the notches of the notched washer.

  13. Measure again the rolling torque 0.7 to 1.2 N·m (6.2 to 10.6 lb in) remains same. If remains same, use Tooling (C) to install retaining ring (11). Install retaining ring (11).

  14. Perform the following procedure to seat the gear assembly bearings.

    1. Install bearing retaining cage (9) by using four bolts (8) and the washers. Tighten bolts (9) to a torque of 55 to 65 N·m (41 to 48 lb ft).

    2. Remove bolts (8) and the washers from the bearing retaining cage (9).

    3. Reinstall bolts (8) without the washers. Use small tightening increments to pull the cage down evenly. Tighten bolts (8) to a torque of 6 to 7 N·m (53 to 62 lb in).

    4. Rotate the pinion in three revolutions.

    5. Increase small tightening increments. Tighten bolts (8) to a torque of 11.3 to 16.3 N·m (100.0 to 144.3 lb in) and rotate the transfer gear in three revolutions. Repeat this step in three times or until the bolts do not rotate on subsequent tightening.

    6. Use suitable micrometer or dial indicator, measure the distance from the bearing cage to the carrier assembly through both gauge holes. Record the average measurement.

    7. Measure the transfer bearing cage flange thickness at each gauge hole. Subtract the average transfer bearing flange thickness from the average measurement recorded from the previous step. This gives the average gap dimension between the cage and the carrier assembly.

    8. To obtain the target shim thickness, add 0.3 mm (0.012 inch) to the average gap determined in the previous step. It will give a cold bearing setting of 0.050 to 0.125 mm (0.0019 to 0.0049 inch) end play.

    9. Assemble the correct shim pack thickness and measure to verify suitable with the target value determined.

    10. Install the shim pack with the transfer bearing cage into the carrier assembly. Install cage bolts (8) and the washers.

    11. Ensure that the transfer gear rotates freely.

  15. Use Tooling (B) to install lip seal (6). Install lip seal (6) and O-ring seal (7).

    Illustration 13g06126604

  16. Install seal retainer (5) and bolts (4).

    Illustration 14g06126602

  17. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to yoke (3). The weight of yoke (3) is approximately 36 kg (80 lb). Install yoke (3).

  18. Install bolt (2).

End By:

  1. Install the transfer case.
