Hydraulic System Oil Filter (Pilot) - Replace

Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact skin.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.



NOTICE

When performing maintenance above ground level, always use appropriate devices such as ladders and man lift machines.


  1. Operate the machine for a few minutes in order to warm the hydraulic system oil.

  2. Level the loader using the stabilizers. Stop the machine engine.

    Note: The return filter cartridge and the hydraulic tank breaker relief valve are located under the access cover behind the loader cab.

    Note: The hydraulic oil tank assembly is located in the right-hand side of the rear frame.

  3. Drain the oil from the hydraulic oil tank by removing the hydraulic oil tank drain plug (1) and opening the drain valve (2).

  4. Move the hydraulic lockout control to the UNLOCKED position.

  5. Turn the engine start switch to the ON position.

  6. Move the joysticks and the travel levers/pedals to the full stroke positions in order to relieve the pressure in the pilot lines.

  7. Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position and return the lever for the hydraulic lockout control to the LOCKED position.

  8. Press the breaker valve button on top of the hydraulic tank in order to relieve the internal pressure of the hydraulic tank.

  9. Clean the area in order to keep dirt out of the filter base.

  10. Loosen the pilot filter housing retaining nut.

    Note: Use a socket or box end wrench when loosening/tightening housing retaining nut.

    Note: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "General Hazard Information" for information on containing fluid spillage.

  11. Remove the filter housing from the filter base.

  12. Remove the pilot filter element from the filter housing

    Note: Used filters should always be disposed of according to local regulations.

  13. Clean the filter base.

  14. Install the new oil filter into pilot filter housing.

    Instructions for the installation of the filter are printed on the side of each Caterpillar filter. For non-Caterpillar filters, refer to the installation instructions that are provided by the supplier of the filter.

  15. Install pilot filter housing and filter on to pilot filter base.

    Note: Use a socket or box end wrench to torque filter retaining bolt.

  16. Torque retaining nut to specifications.

  17. Check the hydraulic oil level.
