Usage:
The throttle position sensor (TPS) eliminates the mechanical throttle and governor linkages (along with their inherent adjustments). The TPS utilizes operator lever movement and sends an electrical signal to the engine Electronic Control Module (ECM). The TPS signal, along with the speed/timing signal is processed by the ECM to control precise engine speed.
Throttle Position Sensor Electrical Specifications
Both the pedal mount throttle position sensor (3E7700 PMTPS) and remote mount throttle position sensor (110-8190 RMTPS) are designed to comply with FMVSS124 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 124). The 3E7700 PMTPS also meets the latest draft of SAE J1843 Recommended Practice.
The 3E7700 PMTPS is mounted directly to the throttle pedal. This eliminates the need for throttle linkages and OEM adjustments. The 3E7700 PMTPS is designed to operate from the ECM +8V supply. Caterpillar recommends the 3E7700 PMTPS for any application requiring an accelerator (throttle) pedal.
Schematic
Example of PWM Signals
The sensor output is a constant frequency signal whose pulse width (duty cycle) varies with throttle position. The Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) signal is expressed as a percentage (percent duty cycle) as shown.
Pedal Mount Throttle Position Sensor Connection
The 3E7700 PMTPS is designed to operate on 8 volts supplied by the ECM. The ECM supplied +8V, Throttle Sensor Common, and Throttle Position must be connected to the control system through an OEM harness. Current draw for the sensor is less than 40 mA.
Throttle Common must not be connected to the vehicle cab ground. Connecting Throttle Common to the vehicle cab ground can degrade control system performance. Throttle Common must be connected to the Sensor Common pin at the OEM Connector P1 Pin-29 via a dedicated return line.
The 3E7700 PMTPS is electrically terminated with a 3-Pin Deutsch DT Receptacle (jack) connector. A Deutsch DT Plug Connector is required in the OEM wiring.
Throttle Position Sensor For Remote PTO Applications
Caterpillar recommends the 110-8190 RMTPS for remote applications. All signal requirements are identical to those outlined for the 3E7700 PMTPS, except the 110-8190 RMTPS requires connection to 12V/24V instead of the ECM supplied +8V.
The 110-8190 RMTPS is supplied with a Deutsch HD plug connector (8T8731 Plug Connector). The connecting harness will require a Deutsch HD receptacle connector (8T8732 Receptacle Connector).
