Note: This procedure shows removing the rear engine away from the front engine.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.



NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.


  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (DEAC) - Change" or Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change". The capacity of the cooling system is approximately 1192 L (315 US gal).

  2. Remove bolts (1) in order to remove cover (2).

  3. Cut cable straps (3).

  4. Disconnect harness assemblies (4).

  5. Remove bracket (5).

  6. Remove tube assembly (6).

  7. Disconnect hose assembly (7).

  14. Disconnect hose assembly (14).

  15. Remove bolts (15) in order to remove brackets (17), tube assembly (16), and the gaskets.

  16. Remove tube assembly (18).

  17. Disconnect hose assemblies (19).

  18. Remove bolts (20) in order to remove brackets (21), tube assembly (22), and the gaskets.

  19. Remove bolts (23).

  20. Remove cable straps (24) and lay harness assembly (25) to the side.

  21. Remove tube assemblies (26).

  22. Attach a suitable lifting device to plate (27). Remove bolts (28) and lay harness assembly (29) to the side. Remove plate (27). The weight of plate (27) is approximately 100 kg (220 lb).

  23. Remove clamp (30), cover assembly (31), and the gasket.

  24. Remove cover (32) and the gasket.

  25. Remove tube assembly (33).

  26. Disconnect tube assembly (34).

  27. Remove block (35) and the gasket.

  28. Disconnect tube assembly (36).

  29. Remove cover (37), the two screens, and the two gaskets.

  30. Remove covers (38) and the gaskets.

  31. Remove bolts (39) in order to remove block (40), adapter (41), and the O-ring seals.

  32. Remove bolts (42) in order to remove covers (43) and the gaskets from the flywheel housings on both engines. Remove plugs (44) from both engines.

    Note: Apply lubricant to Tooling (A) in order to prevent damage to the flywheel housing.

  33. Use Tooling (A) in order to rotate the engines until bolts (42) can be installed in both the flywheels. This is done in order to time both the engines.

  34. Put an identification mark on coupling (45) and one bolt (46).

  35. Remove bolts (42) from both the flywheels. Use Tooling (A) in order to rotate the engines for access to bolts (46). Remove bolts (46) except the one bolt (46) that is marked.

  36. Install bolts (42) to both the flywheels. Remove bolt (46) that is marked.

  37. Slide coupling (45) toward the rear engine.

  38. Remove bolts (47).

  39. Remove bolts (48) from the four corners of the engine.

  40. Attach a suitable lifting device to the rear engine.

  41. Move the rear engine away from the front engine until dowel pins (49) and O-ring seal (50) are away from the front engine.

  42. Remove the rear engine. The weight of the rear engine is approximately 7440 kg (16400 lb).
