Correct Timing Procedure for the Engine {1206, 1212}

Usage:

Machine Engine:
C27 (S/N: EHX1-UP)
Service Magazine, SEPD0794, July 2005, "The Correct Timing Procedure for a C27 Engine". Disregard this article. See the article that follows.

Description of Change:

Note: No new parts or gear changes are required for this procedure.The engines that are listed above contain two sets of timing gears. The location of the timing marks on the camshaft gear has changed between 2 part numbers. These timing gears require a different procedure in order to find the top center (TC) of number 1 piston on the compression stroke. The procedure depends on the part number of your gear.

Adaptable To: The following procedure will help find top center (TC) of the No. 1 piston on the compression stroke:

Refer to the following procedure if you have an engine with a serial number 1-2326. This engine will contain 224-1223 Camshaft Gears :

The camshaft gears have a timing mark that points toward the rear housing at location (A). When the camshaft gears and rear housing marks are aligned, the No. 11 piston is on top center (TC) of the compression stroke. The No. 1 piston is at top center (TC) of the exhaust stroke. To verify that the No. 11 piston is at top center (TC) of the compression stroke, remove the valve cover and check the valves. The inlet and exhaust valves for the No. 11 cylinder should be fully closed. If the valves are fully closed, the rocker arms can be moved by hand. Rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees in order for the No. 1 piston to be at top center (TC) of the compression stroke.

Refer to the following procedure if you have an engine with a serial number 2327-Up. This engine will contain 264-0544 Camshaft Gears :

The camshaft gears have a timing mark that points toward the rear housing at location (A). When the camshaft gears and rear housing marks are aligned, the No. 1 piston is at top center (TC) of the compression stroke. The No. 11 piston is at top center (TC) of the exhaust stroke. In order to verify that the No. 1 piston is at top center (TC) of the compression stroke, remove the valve cover and check the valves. The inlet and exhaust valves for the No. 1 cylinder should be fully closed. If the valves are fully closed, the rocker arms can be moved by hand.
