Introduction
This special instruction will provide a procedure to test if the bucket's cutting edge is parallel to the mounting plate. This procedure measures the difference between the bucket's mounting surface (top plate) and the plane of the bucket's cutting edge.
Required Items
Required Items     | |
Quantity     | Description     |
1     | flat steel table     |
2     | 24 inch steel rulers     |
Note: In order to perform this procedure, a large level area is needed. A large steel table is recommended. Use a straight edge in order to check the surface. Clean the surface. Make sure that the surface is free of defects such as protrusions and depressions. This surface will be used as a reference for the measurement.

- Clean the bottom surface of the bucket. The bucket could have a cutting edge or a base edge. This will depend on the type of bucket. If a multipurpose bucket is being checked, make sure that the blade is clean of debris and defects. Make sure that the clam makes contact across the blade's edge when the clam is closed.
- Place the bucket on the table until the cutting edge (A) is flat. Make sure that the bucket 's cutting edge is not bowed. Refer to illustration 1.
Note: It will be necessary to support the rear of the bucket. Shims may be placed under the bucket. A hoist may be used to support the rear of the bucket.
Note: When the bucket is equipped with teeth, place blocks of equal thickness between the teeth. The teeth should be lifted above the surface of the table.
- Clean the back surface of the bucket at the location that will be measured.
- Place a ruler (C) on the back of the bucket against the top plate (B). Make sure that the ruler is aligned with the hole for the pin and perpendicular with the top plate. Refer to illustration 2.
- Place a second ruler (D) on top of the first ruler (C). Place the second ruler in the pin retention hole (E). Allow the ruler to make contact with the surface of the table. Refer to illustration 2.
- Determine the overall dimension by adding the upper ruler's value at the point of overlap to the lower ruler's length.
- Repeat the same procedure for the other mounting location.
- Determine the difference between the recorded measurements. The acceptable difference is 9.5 mm (0.375 inch) or less.
