SUBJECT: Correct bolt torque when securing the generator flex plate coupling.

PROBLEM:

There have been recorded incidences where the generator assembly has suffered undue damage as a result of improper flex plate coupling bolt torque.

SOLUTION:

This document was created to provide the field service technician with the proper flex plate coupling bolt torque procedure and torque values to ensure proper field assembly.

APPLICATION:

This procedure encompasses both the 8-bolt pattern and 12-bolt pattern flex plate-coupling assemblies. The following table is provided for reference.

PROCEDURE:

The following information is provided as additional supporting information for the aforementioned Caterpillar Service Publications for installing a flex plate coupling assembly. These instructions are not intended to replace or supercede the current Caterpillar Service Publications.

  1. Clean the Generator Hub and Flex Plate from any debris.
  2. Remove any protective film (compound) from the Generator Hub bore and surface area, which contacts the Flex Plate.
  3. Remove any protective film (compound) from the surface area of the Flex Plate, which contacts the Generator Hub.
  4. Ensure that the threaded bolt holes of the Generator Hub are clean and free from debris.
  5. Position the Flex Plate onto the Generator Hub.
  6. Align the mounting holes of the Flex Plate with the threaded bolt holes of the Generator Hub.
  7. Using the appropriate mounting hardware, secure the Flex Plate to the Generator Hub. The retaining bolts are to be installed only "hand tight". Ensure that the Flex Plate remains centered on the Generator Hub.
  8. Refer to Table 3, Standard Column, for the specified retaining bolt torque required for your application.
  9. Apply the appropriate bolt torque to each retaining bolt in the sequence provided in Figure 1. After you apply the appropriate bolt torque to each retaining bolt, place a "mark" on the bolt to confirm that each retaining bolt was properly tightened.
