SUBJECT: 3126B and 3126E Engines Hard Starting in Cold Conditions.
PROBLEM:
Certain 3126B and 3126E Engines have had issues of hard starting in the Grove Crane model TMS500E. This is primarily for temperatures of 30 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. The symptoms include excessive exhaust, soot, smoke, and extending cranking time during cold starts.
SOLUTION:
Caterpillar and Grove Crane have jointly determined that the hydraulic load on the engine during cold start is excessive. Groove Crane has developed a rework kit to reduce the hydraulic applied to the engine during cold starts. This kit incorporates a pump-unloading valve. The valve has a normally closed solenoid valve that will open to the hydraulic tank anytime the following situations occur:
- The transmission is in neutral.
- The parking brake is engaged.
- The main hydraulic pump is disengaged.
If you have experienced any of the cold start issues described above, contact your Grove Crane dealership and reference Grove Crane Service Bulletin G04-004.
