Component Code: 4493

SUBJECT: Certain 3E-5239 Relay Assemblies May Fail

PROBLEM:

Some 3E-5239 Relay Assemblies with the date code 0247 are defective and may fail. The 3E-5239 Relay Assembly is widely used in various applications. Refer to Illustration 1 for the location of the date code.

SOLUTION:

If a defective 3E-5239 Relay Assembly is suspected, turn the key switch to the OFF position and disconnect the relay from the circuit. Use a Caterpillar 146-4080 Multimeter (or equivalent) to measure the coil resistance of the relay. The coil is connected to Terminal 85 and Terminal 86. The correct coil resistance is in the range of 320 Ohms to 400 Ohms. The defective relays have a coil resistance of 80 Ohms to 100 Ohms. A defective relay coil may also measure open circuit or shorted. Replace the relay if necessary.
