SUBJECT: Overburdened Power Transformers Can Lead to Power Transformer Failures
PROBLEM:
Overburdening the Power Transformers (PT) that are used with Medium Voltage Generators on packaged generator sets can lead to PT failures. These medium voltage PTs have an output limit that should not be exceeded. This output limit can be exceeded when additional loads are added to the PT. Additional loads can be added to PTs by non-designed workarounds that are used to fix problems on either the generator set or the switchgear.
SOLUTION:
It is recommended that additional burden not be placed on the PTs. However, if the connection of additional devices is needed, only qualified personnel should make the determination of whether a PT change is acceptable. When a load share module is used, refer to TIBU3445 for specific actions.
