SUBJECT: AFTERCOOLER CORE FAILURES

PROBLEM:

The 216-5147 aftercooler core is being replaced before a failure is verified. Caterpillar has received several reports indicating that the 216-5147 aftercooler core, utilized by the engines listed above, failed allowing the engine to ingest raw water. To date, none of the returned parts have failed bench testing. Incorrect diagnosis of an aftercooler failure causes additional service calls and dissatisfied customers.

 

SOLUTION:

Caterpillar is investigating this issue. In order to aid this investigation, the following information is requested when a Dealer suspects that a 216-5147 core has failed:

 

  • Please indicate whether the core was pressure checked or not.
  • Please clearly identify the location of the raw water leak. This can be accomplished with a paint pen or other suitable marking devise.

 

If a failed 216-5147 aftercooler core is identified complete the following steps:

 

  • Refer to Product Support Program PS50320.
  • Return all 216-5147 aftercooler cores that have been identified as probable failures to the following address:
