SUBJECT: POSSIBLE OIL LEAK AT THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE
PROBLEM:
The 3H-0976 O-Ring Seal is used between the front crankshaft seal group and the front housing cover. This O-ring seal may "overfill" the O-ring seal groove. The "overfilling" may warp the crankshaft seal and/or carrier flange. This can result in excessive misalignment between the crankshaft seal and the crankshaft. This may result in an oil leak past the front crankshaft seal.
SOLUTION:
Replace the 3H-0976 O-Ring Seal with a 220-3373 Ring Seal. The 220-3373 Ring Seal has a rectangular cross-section. This will prevent the "overfilling" of the O-ring seal groove. See the illustration.
Note: The 220-3373 Ring Seal should be used as a service replacement for the 3H-0976 O-Ring Seal in the front crankshaft seal applications on all 3176, 3196, C-10 and C-12 Engines that are currently in the field.
TYPICAL FRONT HOUSING GROUP
