SUBJECT: BOLT BREAKAGE AT EXHAUST MANIFOLD SLIP JOINTS

PROBLEM:

Some of these engines have experienced bolt breakage at some slip joints on the exhaust manifolds. The bolt breakage is a result of a slip joint that will not move. An immovable slip joint can be caused by the following problems:

? Soot may accumulate in the slip joint.

? Incorrect assembly of the exhaust manifold may result in a lack of clearance around the bolts. This could limit or prevent the needed movement of the exhaust manifold sections.

? Over tightening the exhaust manifold bolts may prevent the intended movement of the exhaust manifold slip joints.

SOLUTION:

When performing repairs for this problem, see the components that are identified in the "Optional Replacement" column of the following table. The quantities that are identified in the table are for one slip joint. The use of the "Optional Replacement" components will help prevent the seizure of the slip joint. This will help prevent the breakage of the bolts that fasten the slip joint together.

Note: The manifold casting does not need to be changed.

Tighten the "Optional Replacement" 2N-2766 Lock Nuts to a torque of 55 N× m (41 lb ft). Do not over-tighten the lock nuts.
