SUBJECT: PREMATURE INLET AND/OR EXHAUST VALVE FAILURE

REFERENCE: Engine News, March 1998, "Be Sure To Use The Correct Inlet And Exhaust Valves In Engines With Valve Bridges That Do Not Ride On Dowels"

PROBLEM:

Some 3412C (3JK) Marine Engines have experienced premature failure of the inlet and exhaust valves.

SOLUTION:

Note: Prior to 3412C (3JK00880) Marine Engine, the valve mechanism groups included valve bridges that rode on dowels (See Illustration 1). The distance from the top retainer groove to the end of the valve stem is 12.45 mm (0.490 inches) for the valves that are used with valve bridges that DO ride on dowels (See Illustration 2).

Beginning with 3412C (3JK00880), the valve mechanism included valve bridges that do NOT ride on dowels (See Illustration 3.) The distance from the top retainer groove to the end of the valve stem is 15.45 mm (0.608 inches) for the valves that are used with valve bridges that do NOT ride on dowels (See Illustration 4).

For 3412C (3JK1-00879) Marine Engines, the recommended repair is to replace the cylinder head groups with Remanufactured 10R-0761 Cylinder Head Groups and replace the inlet and exhaust valve bridges with 100-6889 Valve Bridges. DO NOT INSTALL 164-2543 INLET VALVES OR 164-2542 EXHAUST VALVES IF VALVE BRIDGES THAT RIDE ON DOWELS ARE USED.

For 3412C (3JK00880-Up) Marine Engines, the 164-2543 Inlet Valve is available to replace the 122-0322 Inlet Valve and the 164-2542 Exhaust Valve is available to replace the 122-0321 Exhaust Valve on engines equipped with valve bridges that do NOT ride on dowels. The 164-2543 Inlet Valve and the 164-2542 Exhaust Valve are include in the new 205-5792 Cylinder Head Group and the Remanufactured 10R-0761 Cylinder Head Group.
