Problem:
The 190-8487 Vacuum Pump Oil obtained from the Caterpillar parts system prior to April 20, 2002 may be contaminated. If this oil is used to service the UPS vacuum pump, the vacuum pump may not be able to establish the proper vacuum level. As a result the UPS may not operate correctly.
Solution:
This contaminated oil would have been introduced into a system ONLY during a dealer preventative maintenance service call. This oil was available in one-liter bottles as 190-8487 Vacuum Pump Oil. This oil was also included in the 203-5447 and 9E-5714 Parts Kits.
NOTE: A parts PIP has been issued to remove all contaminated oil from the dealer's inventory.
NOTE: Any 190-8487 Vacuum Pump Oil or 203-5447 Parts Kit obtained from the Caterpillar parts system after April 20, 2002 is acceptable for use.
If a system has had an oil change and 190-8487 Vacuum Pump Oil was used, and there is a problem obtaining a proper vacuum level, the oil must be changed again.
NOTE: The vacuum pump's inability to draw required vacuum would be obvious immediately after the addition of the contaminated oil during the oil change.
If the contaminated oil was introduced into the pump, and the proper vacuum can not be drawn, it will be necessary to purge contaminates from the pump. To purge the contaminated vacuum pump oil from the pump, use the following procedure.
PURGE PROCEDURE:
NOTE: Use the applicable Operation and Maintenance Manual as a guide for this procedure.
- 1. Turn the "Mode Selector" on the left side of the vacuum pump fully counter clockwise. Operate the vacuum pump for two hours.
- 2. Turn the vacuum pump off. Open the "Gas-ballast Control" on the top of the pump by placing it in the "II" position.
- 3. Remove the oil filler plug. Open the drain valve until the oil flows freely. Drain the oil into a suitable container. Allow sufficient time for the oil to drain completely.
- 4. Close the drain valve. Slowly add new oil (0.7 liter of 190-8487 Vacuum Pump Oil obtained from the Caterpillar parts system after April 20, 2002) through the filler hole until the oil is at the fill line on the sight glass. Install the filler plug.
- 5. Close the gas ballast by placing it in the "I" position.
- 6. Turn the vacuum pump on. Allow the pump to operate for one hour.
