New Procedure To Install Pilot Pump Bearing Gear Caterpillar

New Procedure To Install Pilot Pump Bearing Gear

Usage:

WHEELED EXCAVATORSM318 (BMD, 8AL, 6ES, 8SS),
M320 (6WL, 9PS) WHEELED EXCAVATORS

Problem:

There have been reports of joint failure between the pilot pump input gear and the pilot pump-bearing shaft.

The affected pilot pump is the 187-7419 Pump Group Gear.

Failure of the shaft/gear joint results in the loss of pilot pump pressure. When the pilot pump is removed you will find that the gear will spin freely on the bearing shaft.

Solution:

If this condition exists, use the following procedure in order to correct the problem.

Required Parts

7C-1782 - Gear
171-2989 - Locknut
153-2666 - Bearing

Rework Procedure:

1. Remove the pilot pump and bearing from the engine.
2. Remove the bearing from the pilot pump.
3. Discard the 153-2666 Bearing, the 7C-1782 Gear, and the 171-2989 Locknut.
4. Apply Loctite 648 to the new 153-2666 Bearing Shaft, and install a new 7C-1782 Gear to the bearing shaft.
5. Apply Loctite 648 to the bearing shaft threads, and install a new 171-2989 Locknut. Tighten the locknut to a torque of 75.0 N·m ± N·m (55.0 lb ft ± 5.0 lb ft).
6. Install the bearing to the pilot pump.
7. Install the pilot pump and the bearing to the engine.
8. Make certain that the pilot pump is installed in such manner that there is no bending load on the pilot pump mounting bolts. The pilot pump-mounting bracket can be adjusted fore and aft to ensure that there is no gap between the pilot pump and the mounting bracket. Refer to Illustration 1.
