Problem:

In addition to an obvious failure of a 115-9393 or 179-7272 Unit Injector Lifter Assembly, there are two additional criteria that necessitate replacement of these unit injector lifter assemblies.

Solution:

The two additional criteria that necessitate replacement of these unit injector lifter assemblies follow:

1. If there is a hard unit injector seizure, the unit injector lifter assembly for the seized unit injector should be replaced. The forces generated by the unit injector seizure can damage the roller axle in the unit injector lifter assembly. If the unit injector lifter assembly is not replaced, the unit injector lifter assembly may fail at some time (typically >10,000 miles) after the unit injector repair.
2. If the cylinder head is removed for either a lifter repair or some other reason, the position of the arrows on the lifter roller axle in all six unit injector lifter assemblies should be examined. If the position of the arrow is more than 10 degrees from vertical (see the illustration) the unit injector lifter assembly should be considered failed and it should be replaced. The incorrect position of the arrow indicates that the roller axle has begun to turn in the lifter body and the oil gathering flat on top of the axle is no longer correctly positioned. Thus, the roller/axle interface will not be properly lubricated. If the axle has turned in the lifter body, the roller may eventually separate from the lifter body and cause extensive block damage.
