Cylinder Block Bore Wear Caterpillar

Cylinder Block Bore Wear

Usage:

ENGINES3116 (4KG, 1SK),
3126 (8NM, 6SR, 4EZ) MARINE ENGINES

Problem:

There have been reports of early hour cylinder bore wear on these engines. This can cause excess crankcase blowby, white smoke on startup, or diesel odor in the exhaust fumes.

Solution:

1. Check the cylinder bores carefully for cracks. A typical crack would be a vertical crack in the front half of the cyliner, midway down. If the bore is cracked, replace the cylinder block.
2. Use a Mitutoyo number 209-878 metric dial caliper (or an equivalent) to measure the cylinder blockwall thickness. The Mitutoyo number 209-878 metric dial caliper has:
* 0-20 mm range
* 0.01 mm graduations
* 85 mm throat depth

Measure the cyliner block wall thickness at the front of each cylinder and about 30 mm below the top face of the block. Access with the thin leg of the caliper through the water passage between the cylinders. If the minimum cylinder wall thickness measured on any cylinder is LESS THAN 4.3 mm, replace the block.

3. After the cylinder block passes the tests in Steps 1 and 2 above, then sleeve ONLY the cylinder bores that have a step at the top of the top ring travel that can be felt with your finger nail. Refer to SEBF8261-02, "Installing A 7C-6208 Cylinder Sleeve In 3114/3116 Engines". Use a 107-7604 Cylinder Sleeve for 3126 Engines. Use a 7C-6208 Cylinder Sleeve for 3116 Enignes.
4. Following the instructions in SEBF8261-02, hard hone all cylinder bores to restore the crosshatch pattern.
5. For 3126 engines only, reassemble using the 175-3670 (CCS) Top Ring. For 3116 engines only, reassemble using the 107-7787 (CCS) Top Ring.
