Soot On Boat Transom

Usage:

ENGINES3126 (8NM1-2819) 420 HP MARINE ENGINES

THIS TIB REPLACES THE JANUARY 28, 1998 ENGINE TIB, COMPONENT CODE 1050, "SOOT ON BOAT TRANSOM" DESTROY THE JANUARY 28, 1998 TIB. IT WILL NOT APPEAR IN THE QUARTERLY INDEX.

Problem:

There have been some reports of excessive soot accumulation on the transom of boats powered by 420 horsepower 3126 (8NM) Marine Engines.

Solution:

If excessive soot accumulation is a problem, do the following steps.

1. Use Hydrosolve solvent to clean the aftercooler core as directed in the Operation And Maintenance Manual. It may be necessary to soak the aftercooler core in the solvent overnight. Stand the aftercooler core on edge while soaking to allow the solvent to circulate through the core.
2. Clean the turbocharger compressor wheel and back plate with 4C-4079 Brake and Electrical Component Cleaner.
3. Install a M3X0313 Turbocharger Compressor Housing. This is a special compressor housing that is ONLY available by calling Virgil Newman [Phone: (309) 578-3793]. Be ready to provide:
* Dealer Contact.
* Customer Name.
* Boat Name.
* Engine Serial Number.

Return the removed turbocharger compressor housing to:

NOTE: If a M3X0313 Turbocharger Compressor Housing is not available, replace the turbocharger with a 0R-6925 Remanufactured Turbocharger Group. The remanufactured turbocharger group is the equivalent of the original turbocharger group.

4. Remove the existing turbocharger air inlet hose and install a 149-3243 Hose to reduce fouling.
5. Retighten the turbocharger mounting nuts to a torque of 54 N·m (40 lb ft).
6. Reset the Fuel Ratio Control (FRC) 1.0 turn tighter than standard (5.0 mm dynamic on engine). Fine tune the FRC to get 10 to 12 seconds from dead stop to when the turbochargers "kick in". Also adjust the FRC so that both turbochargers "kick in" at the same time.
7. Change the engine oil and filter. Engines with an AirSeps crankcase fumes recirculation system should change to a straight weight oil. Use only SHELL ROTELLA-T SAE 30W oil, or EXXON XD-3 EXTRA SAE 30W oil. These are the only API licensed SAE 30W CF4 oils. Engines without an AirSeps crankcase fumes recirculation system do not need to change to a straight weight oil. The oil refill quantity, including the filter, is 25 liters. Check the dipstick full mark after the correct amount of oil has been added to the engine. If the dipstick oil level is different from the full mark, make a new full mark and remove the former full mark. Instruct the customer to use ONLY SHELL ROTELLA-T SAE 30W oil, or EXXON XD-3 EXTRA SAE 30W oil in future oil changes. This will help prevent fouling of the turbocharger and/or aftercooler core.
8. If, after completing Steps 1 through 7, the engine will not run at a minimum of 2800 rpm with the boat loaded (as the customer normally uses it), check:
* Transmission in neutral, engine high idle.
* Maximum inlet manifold boost pressure (30 psi minimum with new compressor housing).
* Fuel flow rate (22 gph nominal).
* Check for air in the fuel return line.

If there is no problem, have the customer change propellers to obtain a minimum of 2800 rpms at full load.
