Check Cylinder Block After Exhaust Manifold Failures Caterpillar

Check Cylinder Block After Exhaust Manifold Failures

Usage:

ENGINES3126 (8NM) MARINE ENGINES

Problem:

Frequently there is collateral damage to the cylinder head, head gasket, or cylinder block due to the overheat condition of an exhaust manifold or turbocharger turbine housing failure.

Solution:

After exhaust manifold and/or turbine housing repair, the cooling system should be checked for leaks using the 9S-8140 Pressurizing Pump Group. Also, check for combustion gas leakage into the cooling system. This can be done by running the expansion tank overflow line into an inverted bottle and watching for bubbles at full load.

If the results of this testing shows that removal of the cylinder head to correct the problem is required, check the cylinder head and cylinder block bores thoroughly for cracks due to overheating. Some early cylinder blocks have had problems of porosity between cylinders and some 3126 Marine Engines had problems with thin cylinder walls. For this reason, engines built prior to 8NM800 may be more likely to crack the block because of overheating.
