Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Is Not An Acceptable Lubricant For Flexxaire Fans

Usage:

GENERALCATERPILLAR MACHINES EQUIPPED WITH FLEXXAIRE FANS

THIS TECHNICAL INFORMATION BULLETIN REPLACES THE JANUARY 8, 1997 TECHNICAL INFORMATION BULLETIN TITLED,"CATERPILLAR MACHINES EQUIPPED WITH FLEXXAIRE FANS". DESTROY THE JANUARY 8, 1997 TIB. IT WILL NOT APPEAR IN THE QUARTERLY INDEX.

Problem:

Flexxaire fans with serial numbers below 3000 or JS3000 used ATF lubricant.

Solution:

Check the serial number plate located on the actuator support arm. If the oil must be changed, refer to the machine service manual or the manual supplied with the fan and drain the current oil (Dexron Automatic Transmission Fluid) from the fan.

Flexxaire fans require a lubricant that maintains properties over long change intervals (low maintenance) and has high temperature viscosity (10.2-19.0 CST at 100° C). For low temperature operation only, maintain low temperature properties of pour point of minus 48° C.

NOTE: Make sure the pour point of the oil is slightly below the minimum expected ambient temperature. Avoid the use of non-synthetic oils, as they typically provide lower service life.

Fill the empty fan with Castrol FSX 5W-50 oil. Alternative oils and change intervals are as follows:
