PROBLEM
The boom may crack on certain 312D 2L and 318D 2L Excavators. The boom may develop cracks on the boom nose, near the rear baffle or boom foot. If the cracks are not repaired in a timely manner, the cracks may propagate and cause further damage to the boom. |

ACTION REQUIRED
IMPORTANT: Please create DSN ticket for detailed instructions when a failure occurs. IMPORTANT: If the boom is replaced or repaired, please attach pictures of the failed boom including boom serial number, actual operation hours, and the cracking location when submitting the warranty claim. These photos will also be required to help expedite parts orders. If the affected machine has less than 4000 hours, replace the failed boom with a new boom. If the affected machine has more than 4000 hours, the failed boom can be weld repaired or replaced at the dealers discretion based on the commercial situation. If the boom is replaced, refer to the proration table in the service claim allowance section of this letter. Repair the cracked boom. Refer to REHS4944, Special Instruction, "Procedures for the Repair of Cracks in Reach Booms on Certain Excavators", for the correct repair procedures for the type of crack. The Special Instruction details six different repair procedures, depending on the type of crack. This Special Instruction only provides general guidelines for different types of repairs. Details (including dimensions) could vary for different boom models. Please contact DSN for detailed instruction. When claiming for repairs, refer to the Service Claim Allowances table for the correct claim allowances for the type of repair performed. The actual repair performed should be detailed in the claim story in the format that is shown in the example below. Example: This is a claim story for a Type A and Type D crack repair with boom reinforcement. Completed Special Instruction, REHS4944, to repair cracks in the boom. Claiming per the service letter guidelines for the following repairs: R&I ? 16 hours Transportation of boom - $500 Repair for a type A crack ? 20 hours and $300 misc Repair for a type D crack ? 16 hours and $800 misc Installed Reinforcing Plates ? 12 hours and $300 misc Total Repair = Labor Hours = 64 hours Misc. = $1400 Transportation = $500 |
