PROBLEM
For certain groups, the oil pressure needs to be reduced by the removal of shims on the oil pressure regulator. In addition, the oil filter housing cover needs to be replaced on certain C175-16 Generator Sets, and C175-16 Locomotive Engines. The existing cover can fail and cause oil leaks which in conjunction with other factors or circumstances, may result in a risk of personal injury or death. |

ACTION REQUIRED
Remove all 396-4412 covers without an "x" stamped on the front of the cover or a change level 01 or 02 on the back side of the cover. |
Note: There are 4 Groups for this program. Group 1 - Requires replacement of oil filter housing cover only. Covers were previously replaced. Group 2 - Requires replacement of oil filter housing cover only. Covers were previously replaced. Group 3 - Requires replacement of oil filter housing cover and removal of shims in oil pressure regulator. Group 4 - Requires replacement of oil filter housing cover only. The engine must be stopped and properly locked out and tagged out. Battery cables should be disconnected and their ends taped. The main breaker should be in the off position and the generator set must be disconnected from all loads and sources. The service tech must understand all steps to this replacement before beginning work. Drain the oil using the oil drain valve on the oil filter housing cover. Replace the existing oil filter housing cover, mounting bolts and o-ring. Replace the 8L-2786 O-ring for the oil drain valve and the 375-6181 O-ring for the cover to housing joint. Replace the existing 6V-3822 bolts with new 291-5203 bolts. The existing spring that holds the oil filters in will need to be removed from the existing cover. To do this, one must compress the spring to remove it from the groove inside the cover. Install the existing spring in the same grove of the new 453-0861 Cover. Group 3 requires replacement of the oil filter housing cover as well as the removal of shims in the oil pressure regulator. Use previous instructions for the oil filter housing cover removal and installation. To remove the Oil Pressure Regulator, refer to RENR7466, Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Remove" for the C175-16 Engine. Remove four shims under the bottom 288-4597 Spring. Refer to Specifications, RENR9337, "Pressure Control Valve ? Oil Regulator Valve and Oil Bypass Valve" and Disassembly and Assembly, RENR7466 and Image 1. Remove four 177-7130 Shims. If possible, after the shims are removed, start the engine and run under load until the engine oil temperature of 95 C (203 F) to 100 C (212 F) is reached. Verify that oil pressure is between 550 kPa (80 psi) and 600 kPa (87 psi). Each removed shim should result in approximately 15 kPa (2 psi) drop in oil pressure. If the existing regulator has less than 4 shims, please contact your Dealer Technical Communicator (TC) for additional support. |
