Important Information
In the procedure for valve seat insert removal given in this instruction, a grinder and grinding wheel are used to grind a groove around the inside of each insert. The extractor then fits in this groove. For 3200 and 3400 Series Engine cylinder heads (3400 shown) check for clearance at location (A), under each valve seat insert (1). If there is clearance enough for installation and use of an extractor, it will not be necessary to grind the groove in the valve seat insert.
For removal of valve seat inserts that have an inside diameter smaller than the 1.250" (31.8) diameter of grinding wheel (2), it will be necessary to use a 6V4801 Dressing Stone (3) to decrease the grinding wheel diameter to the size needed.
Use 6V4801 Dressing Stone (3) to keep a sharp edge on each grinding wheel. When dressing a worn grinding wheel, make the edge thickness of the wheel a little more than the thickness of lips (B) on the extractors.
All Caterpillar Cylinder Heads Except D343, G343, 1693 And 5.4" (137) Bore 90° Vee Engines
(1) Measure from bottom surface (A) of the cylinder head, to a point approximately .060" (1.5) below any angular face (B) on the valve seat insert.
(2) Put 6V4197 Grinder Base (1) on 6V4198 Grinder (2). Install a 6V4802 Grinding Wheel (3) on grinder (2), then adjust the position of base (1) on grinder (2) as shown, to set the depth of cut for grinding wheel (3) according to the measurement found in step 1. Tighten bolt (4) to keep base (1) in position on grinder (2).
(3) Use the grinder assembly as shown to make a groove (C), all the way around the inside diameter of each valve seat insert (5) that is to be removed. Make groove (C) approximately .030" (0.76) deep.
(4) Find the extractor (6) that has the largest diameter step (D), (E) or (F) that will fit the inside diameter of the valve seat insert to be removed. Install that extractor on 6V4192 Shaft Assembly (7).
(5) Put the tool assembly in the valve seat insert so that necessary step, (D), (E) or (F) of the extractor is in alignment with groove (C) (see step 3). Turn shaft (7) to cause expansion of the extractor step in the groove. (Use only a small amount of force for expansion of the extractor. Too much force can damage the extractor.)
(6) Turn 6V4804 Crank Handle (8) back far enough to put 6V4199 Lifting Bracket (9) in position as shown. Now, turn crank handle (8) down to remove the valve seat insert from the cylinder head. Turn shaft (7) to release the insert from extractor (6).
D343, G343, 1693 And 5.4" (137) Bore 90° Vee Engines
(1) Put 6V4191 Wedge Plate (1) over the valve seat insert that is to be removed. Push pins (2) down in the cylinder head stud holes to keep wedge plate (1) in position.
(2) Measure from face (A) of wedge plate (1) to a point approximately .060" (1.5) below any angular face (B) on the valve seat insert.
(3) Put 6V4197 Grinder Base (3) on 6V4198 Grinder (4). Install a 6V4802 Grinding Wheel (5) on grinder (4), then adjust the position of base (3) on grinder (4) as shown, to set the depth of cut for grinding wheel (5) according to the measurement found in step 2 above. Tighten bolt (6) to keep base (3) in position on grinder (4).
(4) Put the grinder assembly on wedge plate (1) and grind a groove (C), all the way around the inside diameter of each valve seat insert (5) that is to be removed. Make groove (C) approximately .030" (0.76) deep.
(5) Remove wedge plate (1) and find the extractor (6) that has the largest diameter step (D), (E) or (F) that will fit the inside diameter of the valve seat insert to be removed. Install that extractor on 6V4192 Shaft Assembly (7).
(6) Put the tool assembly in the valve seat insert so the necessary step, (D), (E) or (F) of the extractor is in alignment with groove (C) (see step 3). Turn shaft (7) to cause expansion of the extractor in the groove. (Use only a small amount of force for expansion of the extractor. Too much force can damage the extractor.)
(7) Put wedge plate (1) and 6V4199 Lifting Bracket (8) in position as shown; turn 6V4804 Handle (9) down to remove the valve seat insert from the cylinder head.
(8) Turn shaft (7) to release the insert from extractor (6).
