Installation Of 7N9013 Gasket Service Group{1101, 1221}

Usage:

3408 (67U106-224),
(99U539-583),
(28V257-436),
(48W417-948)

The 7N9013 Gasket Group has the parts needed to give a better seal to the lubrication oil passages between the cylinder block and cylinder head. Two of the gasket groups are needed for each engine. This will prevent leakage of lubrication oil into the engine cooling system. Other extra parts that are needed will be variable according to the engine arrangement, or how much disassembly is done to the engine.

The 7N9013 Gasket Group can be installed on the above engines that use cylinder head bolts as an oil supply passage for lubrication of the rocker shafts. Installation of this gasket group will give a better seal around the bolt hole oil passages. Before installation of the gasket group, four bolt holes in each of the original 4N4178 Spacer Plates must be made larger according to the procedure given in this instruction. If the original spacer plates are damaged and cannot be used again, new 7N8358 Spacer Plates are available as a replacement.

(1) Drain the cooling system and the engine oil pan. Remove the cylinder heads, spacer plates and gaskets. Clean the top surface of the cylinder block.

(2) Remove all hoses for the radiator. Thoroughly flush (clean) the inside of the cylinder block, cylinder heads, the radiator core and any other parts that need to be cleaned, to remove the oil film (thin layer of oil) from all coolant passages.

(3) Clean the coolant passages in the cylinder head. Inspect the cylinder head; if the cylinder head has cracks or other damage, a new cylinder head is needed.

(4) It is necessary to make a modification to each of the 4N4178 Spacer Plates, according to the procedure that follows.

NOTE: If the original spacer plates are damaged and cannot be used again, install new 7N8358 Spacer Plates. The new spacer plates do not need modification.

(5) Thoroughly clean both sides of each 4N4178 Spacer Plate (1). Check the thickness of each spacer plate (1); the thickness must be .338" ± .001" (8.59 ± 0.03). If the spacer plate thickness is correct, use a 31/32" diameter 8 or 10 fluted reamer at a speed of 110 rpm to increase four holes (A) to a diameter of .968" ± .010" (24.6 ± 0.3).

(6) Remove all burrs (rough, sharp edges) at locations (B) of each hole (A). Use a steel stamp to mark the part number 7N8358, a minimum of .19" (4.8) high, on the edge of each spacer plate at location (C), to let it be known that the reconditioning has been done and new seals and gaskets have been installed in the engine.

(7) Check cylinder liner projection. See the Service Manual for procedure. Install the 7N9007 Gaskets (4) and 7N8358 Spacer plates (1) on the cylinder block. Install the gaskets and spacer plates dry.

NOTICE

The top of the cylinder block and both sides of each spacer plate (1) and gasket (4) must be clean and dry at installation.

(8) Install the 7N9006 Head Gaskets (5), clean and dry, on the spacer plates. Put a 7N623 Seal (6) in each of the holes (A) that were made larger in step 5. Install all other water seals and seals that are needed. Install cylinder heads (7) and all head bolts (8). Tighten the head bolts according to the torque and procedure given in the Service Manual.

NOTE: Install the 7N623 Seals clean and dry. Never use a 7N623 Seal a second time. If a cylinder head is removed for any reason, always install new 7N623 Seals at time of cylinder head installation.

(9) Install the new radiator hoses, engine oil filter and all other parts that were removed. Put clean oil in the engine and fill the cooling system with the correct coolant.
