An improved final drive pinion bearing setting procedure has been developed. The improved shim thickness selection makes it easier to achieve proper pinion bearing endplay.
NOTE: The 138-4126 Shim Pack includes three shim sizes: 0.50 mm (.019 in), 0.30 mm (.012 in), and 0.16 mm (.006 in). The following procedure should achieve a final drive bearing endplay of approximately 0 mm (0 in) to .05 mm (0.002 in).
NOTE: Larger bearings were implemented on Challenger 65C, 65D (2ZJ2411), Challenger 75D (5AR360), and Challenger 85D (4GR509) Agricultural Tractors. Along with this change, the 136-4273 Retainer is used with the same 138-4126 Shim Pack Kit.
Final Drive Pinion Bearing Setting Procedure
Before assembling, make sure all parts are clean and free of dirt. Also check to ensure that 8B-1312 Dowels (not shown) are not installed in the 133-6526 or 136-4273 Retainer (5) at this point.
Final Drive Group.
1. Install two 1A-1135 Bolts (1) and 5P-8247 Washers (2) 180 degrees apart in retainer (5). Evenly tighten the bolts to a torque of 34 N·m (25 lb ft) while rotating 3W-5636 Gear (4).
2. Tighten two bolts (1) to a torque of 68 N·m (50.3 lb ft). Then loosen bolts (1), but do not remove them at this point.
3. Evenly retighten the same two bolts to a torque of 17 N·m (13 lb ft) while again rotating the gear. This torque is very critical and must be correct in order to determine correct shim thickness.
4. Measure and compute average gap (A) between the face of retainer (5) and the face of the case at the outside diameter of each bolt.
5. Remove retainer (5) and install 9X-2406 Dowels (not shown).
6. Select shims (3) from the 138-4126 Shim Pack to achieve as follows:
-
- * For the taper gage, Shim thickness (T) = Average gap (a) + 0.203 mm (.008 in).
- * For the feeler gage, Shim thickness (T) = Average gap (a) + 0.25 mm (.010 in). The dowels should extend out from the face of retainer (5) 16 mm (.6 in) to 18 mm (.7 in). The 9X-2406 Dowels may be longer than the original dowels. The 9X-2406 Dowels could possibly bottom out in the housing, but the bolt force will drive them into retainer (5).
- * For the taper gage, Shim thickness (T) = Average gap (a) + 0.203 mm (.008 in).
NOTE: The 17 N·m (13 lb ft) torque is used to preload the bearing set before measuring the average gap. As a result, the distance of 0.203 mm (.008 in) is added to the average gap in order to compensate for the spring rate of the bearings, the retainer, and the bolts.
Use the following chart in order to determine the best combination of shims to achieve thickness (T). Although the smallest shim thickness is 0.16 mm (.006 in), a finer adjustment is possible by reshuffling shims. Reshuffling shims results in changes as small as .02 mm (.001 in).
7. Install all bolts (1) and washers (2) into the retainer (5) with selected shims. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 270±40 N·m (200 ± 30 lb ft).
8. As a final check, manually rotate the pinion and subjectively determine the rolling torque. The pinion should rotate freely.
