Reference: Service Magazine; May 8, 1995; Page 11; "Larger Bolts Provide Improved Bearing Retention For Increased Fan Bearing Life"

The following assembly practices should be used to help extend the service life of the fan drive in the 7W-7285, 9Y-8897, 107-0784, and 107-8707 Fan Drive Groups in the above machines.

1. Each time the fan drive is assembled, use the following new components:

* One 1J-4034 Lip Seal
* Two 6Y-7651 Roller Bearing Cones
* Two 6Y-7652 Roller Bearing Cups
* One 5F-3144 O-Ring Seal

2. The former 7W-3466 Fan Pulley Hub has been replaced by the new 9Y-2647 Fan Pulley Hub in the fan drive groups in the above machines. The new hub has an improved fit between the hub and bearings. Be sure a 9Y-2647 Fan Pulley Hub (10) is being used in the assembly.

3. When correctly assembled with new or reusable components, there will be an air gap (W) between the end of the 113-8158 Shaft (2) and the 113-8159 Retainer (5). See Illustration 1. There must be an air gap to insure that the 6Y-7651 Roller Bearing Cones (4) and the 7E-2456 Spacer (9) are clamped on the 113-8158 Shaft (2). If there is no air gap, the bearing cones (4) may rotate on the shaft (2).

4. To help prevent bearing cone (4) rotation on the shaft (2), make the following measurements:

a. Measure the distance from the end of the 113-8158 Shaft (2) to the shoulder on the 9Y-9388 Bracket (11). This is dimension (X). See Illustration 2. Dimension (X) must be 118.50 ± 0.75 mm (4.665 ± .030 in). Some minor wear or fretting is allowed on the shoulder of bracket at Location (C).

(W) = Air gap between the end of the shaft (2) and the retainer (5). The air gap is NOT to scale.

b. Measure the length of the 7E-2456 Spacer (9). This is dimension (Y). See Illustration 3. Dimension (Y) must be 76.21 ± 0.05 mm (3.000 ± .002 in). Some minor wear or fretting is allowed on the ends of the spacer.

c. Measure the thickness of the 113-8159 Retainer (5). This is Dimension (Z). See Illustration 4. Dimension (Z) must be 18.0 ± 0.2 mm (.71 ± .01 in). Some minor wear or fretting is allowed on the faces of the retainer.

Illustration 4.

5. To improve bearing retention, 1/2inch bolts may be used to fasten the retaining washer to the shaft. Formerly, 3/8inch bolts were used. See the Reference Article for information about modifying the retaining washer and shaft. If this modification has already be done, check to be sure that the holes were correctly machined.

6. Be sure that ONLY 2M-0849 Hardened Washers (7) are used between the 113-8159 Retainer (5) and the 7X-3325 Bolts (6).

7. The bearings (3) and (4) should be packed with grease upon assembly. The grease must be compatible with the grease used by the customer.

8. Tighten bolts (6) to a torque of:

* 3/8inch bolts - 47 ± 9 N·m (35 ± 7 lb ft)
* 1/2inch bolts - 105 ± 20 N·m (77 ± 15 lb ft)

9. After the fan drive group is assembled, add grease at the nipple to fill all the cavities. Add grease until the grease just starts to flow out of the relief fitting.
