Caterpillar Introduces New Long Life Heavy Duty Engine Coolant{1395}

Usage:

All Machines Powered By Caterpillar Engines

After extensive field testing, Caterpillar is introducing a commercial Long Life Engine Coolant (LLC) for use in Caterpillar and other heavy duty engines. This coolant is ethylene glycol based for freeze and anti-boil protection. The anti-corrosion package of LLC is totally different from the present silicate, molybodate, nitrate, borate and phosphate packages that have been in use. Because of this difference, the two coolants CAN NOT be mixed. Due to the non-mixing requirements, the customer/users will initiate the use of this coolant. While Caterpillar will not use the new coolant for standard factory fill at this time, an engine or machine may be special ordered with LLC as the fill coolant.

Long Life Heavy Duty Engine Coolant provides improved corrosion protection for the engine cooling system. The life of LLC is 6000 service hours for engines in machine usage. LLC does not require the frequent Supplemental Coolant Additive (SAC) additions associated with the present Caterpillar and competitive coolants. A "one time only" coolant "Extender" addition is all that is required. The "Extender" is added at the half-life of the coolant.

Caterpillar LLC has an effective operating temperature range of -46 to 127 degrees C (-50 to 260 degrees F). At temperatures below -46 degrees C (-50 degrees F), the coolant viscosity will increase, presenting a pumping problem unless provisions are made for larger pumps. The upper temperature of 127 degrees C (260 degrees F) is for coolant bulk temperatures with film temperatures of no more than 149 degrees C (300 degrees F). Brief departures of temperatures above 127 degrees C (260 degrees F) are acceptable for short periods of time. But, prolonged operation above the limits will degrade the glycol and inhibitor system. The system must be pressurized to maintain the coolant in the liquid phase at all times. Any liquid boiling will result in precipitation on surfaces.

LLC will be available as an antifreeze formulation, premixed 50/50 with deionized water or in concentrate in the following container sizes:

119-5152 LLC Extender should be used to treat the coolant at its half-life. This is available in a 1 quart container.

The cooling system should be treated with approximately 1 quart of Extender for each 12 gallons of cooling system capacity. A 15 percent under or over treatment of the system will not create any problem within the cooling system.

For smaller cooling system volumes, the following table provides the recommended Extender dosage.

At the time the LLC is drained from the cooling system, CLEAN WATER is the only system cleaning/flushing agent required.

NOTE: No cleaning agents are to be used when a cooling system using LLC is drained, flushed and refilled.

When a system is being switched over from the present coolant to LLC, Caterpillar cleaner should be used as a part of the change process. After the cleaning solution has been drained, it is VERY IMPORTANT that a thorough water flush be used to remove ALL of the cleaning agent.

LLC can be recycled in the same manner as the present antifreeze. The drained coolant mixture can be "distilled" to remove the ethylene glycol and water for reuse. The inhibitor system and other contaminants are left behind as residual for disposal.

MIXING LLC WITH OTHER PRODUCTS WILL REDUCE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE COOLANT. THIS COULD RESULT IN DAMAGE TO COOLING SYSTEM COMPONENTS. USE ONLY CATERPILLAR LABELED PRODUCTS OR COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS THAT HAVE PASSED THE CATERPILLAR EC-1 SPECIFICATION FOR PRE-MIXED OR CONCENTRATE COOLANTS AND CATERPILLAR EXTENDER.
